    Gamers use a shovel to slash enemies, unearth treasure, and bounce around classic 8-bit environments in the side-scrolling platformer Shovel Knight. Players take on the role of the titular adventurer, who travels across the land battling the Order of No Quarter and their evil leader The Enchantress in hopes of reuniting with his love Shield Knight. Each stage has its own theme and offers unique enemies and hidden areas, and most levels include new sub-weapons that can be upgraded by collecting loot. The game also includes a mission-based Challenge mode and a more difficult NG+ mode.<br><br>The 3DS version includes a unique StreetPass Battle Arena mode, and it lets gamers trade their play coins for in-game gold.

      Greatest Retro-Style Game since the late-80s, early-90s.

      If you're looking at this, you're probably already familiar with Shovel Knight. If not, it is 8-bit inspired, platform gaming. Think DuckTales meets Mega Man meets Super Mario Bros 3. Quite possibly the most fun I've had gaming since I was a kid renting games from Blockbuster in the early 90s. Plus, the physical media comes with downloads for re-conceptualization of the same game using new characters... Plague Knight, Spectre Knight and soon King Knight! Amazing Game!

      You don't have to be born in the 90's, but it helps!

      Shovel Knight is a game much-touted for bringing the pixelated classics of yesteryear back into the public eye. The consensus among reviewers is that if you were a fan of Megaman or other old 2D platforming titles, this game will give you your nostalgia fix in, well, spades. *pause for laughter* Seriously, though, while Shovel Knight was made to play off that old nostalgia, you don't need any of it to appreciate the game. The fact is, Shovel Knight stands up on its own merit- it's a solid, fun, and appealing experience throughout. Graphically, the game is masterful. The artists of the game took care to make each area both visually appealing and completely distinct.       Late-era NES style platforming perfected!

      What we have here is a game whose developers set out to make very faithful to the style of games you'd find on an NES during its heyday. They've hit the mark with a bang. The music is charming and might even make old farts in my age group (30s) teary-eyed from how it deeply touches their nostalgic side. It really immerses you in the feeling of playing a game back in '89 or '90 when Nintendo could do no wrong and the big hits were nearly always destined to become all time classics. For those not familiar with the term "Metroidvania" it's a modern-day gamer slang word for a style of games that emphasize the things that made Metroid and Castlevania such gems in the 80s and beyond.
