      • Slow start & weird ending, but the middle is well worth it.

The first 20 minutes of this film, when the Italian family is deciding whether or not to go to America, is so slow-moving that I almost gave up watching. Salvatore kept yelling at his two teenaged sons and slapping them, which was normal behavior for the time period but didn't endear the characters to me. When they finally boarded the ship, it turned into a different movie --- realistic, riveting, and yet horrible, because the living arrangements below deck were almost as bad as a slave ship. Salvatore meets an English woman, Lucy, and agrees to marry her so that she will be able to get into the United States. It was a little unclear whether Lucy was a prostitute or not, how she wound up in Italy, or how she managed to board the ship because she is initially turned away for not having a ...

      • Crossing the border (The Atlantic Ocean) the reality

When European immigrants crossed the large boarder-- The Atlantic Ocean was their wall. It definitely was not a first class cabin. They were in the lowest part of the boat. No cabins. women and children on one side of the boat, men on the other. They were all together in one room. Many only had the clothes on their backs. They were from different areas of Europe and spoke many different tongues. Many couldn't communicate with each other. They were only allowed on deck at certain times during the day. Many became ill and didn't survive the trip. Once at Ellis Island you had to pass medical and mental exams. If you were too old -- you were on the next boat back to Europe.... There were many rules that even my Bubi didn't tell me about. If you had no one to meet you at the dock, it was a ...

      • Great Immigration movie

The early 1900's Immigration move from Europe to America was accurately told in this movie. It gave me a better understanding of how they were poorly treated from the moment they stepped aboard a ship to Ellis Island. IT was breathtaking well done. This movie has been shown at Ellis Island as well. You will not be disappointed, keep a box of tissues close by too. Journal Entry
