About this product

Product Information

Hard-drinking private eye Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) sleuths the backyard of San Francisco in search of an elusive black bird statuette while evading the setups of three disparate miscreants: the duplicitous Brigid, the perfumed Mr. Cairo, and the scheming Fat Man. John Huston's brilliant directorial debut is aided by first-rate performances, excellent camera work, as well as the director's acute attention to detail while shooting the film. Based on the crime novel by Dashiell Hammett. Academy Award Nominations: 3, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Sydney Greenstreet), and Best Screenplay. Previous versions of the story were filmed in 1931 (a.k.a. DANGEROUS FEMALE) and in 1936 (as SATAN MET A LADY, starring Bette Davis), and poorly redone in 1975 (THE BLACK BIRD).

    Classic Film Noir!

Classic Noir! If you love the classic Film Noir genre this one is a must and if you don't really know then watch it anyway. Fast paced with great actors and characters. Bogart at his best with strong performances from the entire cast. It's a fun ride!

  • Must Have movie for classic film lovers.

Simply put, this is a must have movie for fans of classic cinema. Humphry Bogart in his first starring role and director John Huston's directoral debut. I can only think of one Huston film that equils this one ant it's "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" also starring Bogart. Excellent suporting preformances by Sidney Greenstreet as the sleezy "Fat Man" willing to go to any length to get the BLACK BIRD, Peter Lorre as his greedy partner in crime and Elisha Cook jr. as the Fat Man's two-bit gunsel. And let's not forget Mary Astor as the lusicous femfatal. What's not to enjoy. Buy it, watch it, watch it again, put it in your library and watch it frequently. You wont tire of this Hollywood classic. Marty C. Jan 7th 2011

  • Classic Bogart

A classic film; Bogart at his best. The producers originally wanted George Raft, but he turned it down, for which film fans are grateful. Probably no one but Bogart could have done justice to Sam Spade. The great cast includes Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Elisha Cook Jr., Mary Astor, Ward Bond, and Barton MacLane. The Maltese Falcon set the tone for many other Hollywood film noir classics.

  • Oldie but goodie!

I've sen this before and i also was fortunate enough to watch this on the big screen a couple years back through Fathom Events and Turner Classiv Movies for I believe it was the 75th anniversary of the movie (i can't exactly recall), however I hadn't secured a copy of my own. I compared prices between here and Amazon and here on EBay and found a better used price here, so of course I made my purchase here and i can proudly say it is now part of my personal collection. You can't go wrong with Humphrey Bogart, especially in The Maltese Falcon. What a classic! I wish i could say my collection is complete, but alas, there is always something to add! I'm sure I'll be back again soon to purchase something else! What a find and at a great price (previously owned) and in great condition!
