About this product

Product Information

Based around a 19th century poem by Adam Mickiewicz, PAN TADEUSZ is set in Lithuania, and details an epic feud between two families. Directed by Andrzej Wajda (HUNTING FLIES) the two families in question are of Polish descent, but living under stern Russian rule. With Napoleon threatening to invade, the action unfolds in an extremely historic time, while the personal angle to the story proves to be every bit as absorbing as the major events surrounding it.

  • Great historical fiction with typically wonderful Euro-style scene editing

The movie tells a fictional story of noble-class Poles living in Russian-occupied modern-day Lithuania (which at the 1812 time-set of this story was a part of Poland) just prior to Napoleon's combined French and Polish army's advance to Vilnius from where the invasion of the Russian state began. The significance is that the Polish noble class began to be destroyed by Russia after Napoleon lost that war (to the benefit of the peasant serfs), which was the ancient precursor of the 150 year saga of Poland's struggle to become the modern current Polish Republic. The movie was made in collaboration with French producers and the English subtitles (don't forget to enable them before starting) are a bit bizarre, apparently because they were dictated by French speakers with only a modicum of ...
