About this product

Product Information

Devastated by the loss of their older son, well-to-do suburban couple Calvin (Donald Sutherland) and Beth (Mary Tyler Moore) are trying to rebuild their lives after their younger son, Conrad (Timothy Hutton), attempts suicide. While Beth, who always favored the elder son, retreats into an icy, emotionless shell, Calvin tries to draw Conrad back into the family and into life as a teenager. Conrad sings in the choir and returns to the swim team, but both his brother's death and his own experiences traumatize him. Conrad reluctantly begins therapy sessions with Berger (Judd Hirsch), which allow him some respite from the unbearable grief and guilt he carries with him. As Conrad makes strides, Calvin realizes that he no longer knows his wife and is both saddened and angered by how seemingly emotionless she has become. A classic portrait of family life in the face of tragedy, Robert Redford's award-winning directorial debut is moving and thought provoking. Based on the novel by Judith Guest, the film features the debuts of Timothy Hutton and Elizabeth McGovern as well as breakthrough performances from Mary Tyler Moore and Donald Sutherland.

Ordinary People: A Movie Full of Extraordinary Actors

Saw this film has a young man and really enjoyed it.. Big fan of Timothy Hutton.. I saw it again for the 2nd time last week (2016) and I now have 3 children.. WOW.. What a heart wrenching movie to watch when you are a man with 2 boys of your own.. I also did not realize how incredible of an Actress Mary Tyler Moore was until I saw this film has an adult.. Just an awesome movie.. I now see where Robin Williams and Matt Damon got their base chemistry in Good Will Hunting from the interaction between Judd Hirsch and Timothy Hutton.. very similar human interactions... So glad... I saw this movie again as a mature adult!

  • This Movie Is Not Ordinary

Dealing with the death of a teenage son would never be easy, but in "Ordinary People", Robert Redford makes his Academy Award directorial debut and attempts to deal with it. Ironically, he takes super-sweet, all American Mary Tyler Moore and turns her into a subtly, grief stricken mother Beth, whom we see as all right until the movie unravels her as a bitch--with no affection for her remaining son Conrad (Timothy Hutton) and little affection for her husband Cal (Donald Sutherland). The movie belongs to Timothy Hutton, who won Best Supporting Actor that year and probably should have been nominated as Best Actor since more footage in the movie belongs to him than to anyone else. Conrad survived the boating accident but can barely survive the outcome. He attempts suicide because he is so ...

  • DVD worked well but I would have enjoyed some special features

One of the greatest films ever made in the last 40 years. If you're looking for a film that looks at and deals with raw suburban upper middle class pain and explores what makes some individuals act the way they do and value the things they do, then this is a film worth watching. It doesn't have any vampires, orks, witches, battles with aliens, gratuitous sex, so just wanted to let you know that up front in case you were wondering. It's been one of my top ten films for 30 years.

  • A beautiful movie that stands the test of time

When you watch this movie you can understand why it was nominated for and won the awards it did. It is simply an excellent movie about a family that is disintegrating from grief and other issues. There is not a bad performance in the entire movie from Mary Tyler Moore as the emotionally distant mother to Timothy Hutton's Academy Award winning role of the son. This is a tragic and beautiful movie and it stands the test of time.

  • Compelling & Enlightening

Award-winning film adaptation of Judith Guest's novel, Ordinary People portrays a middle-class family as they struggle to cope with the accidental drowning of the eldest son. The father (Donald Sutherland) feels helpless in trying to reunite the family in its time of need, while the mother (Mary Tyler Moore) avoids any discussion of the tragedy and denies the difficulties in coping with grief. The younger brother, Conrad (Timothy Hutton), is conflicted by anger and guilt as he survived the boating accident while his older brother did not. After a failed suicide attempt, with no one to open up to, Conrad seeks therapy and confides his true feelings to a psychiatrist (Judd Hirsch). Ordinary People is compelling and shines a light on the truth behind the hardships in dealing with grief ...
