Secondo Peter Sloterdijk, nelle moderne democrazie il fisco (la mano che prende) considera i contribuenti (la mano che dà) soggetti passivi da spremere e gabellare automaticamente nel nome del bene pubblico. In tal modo, lo Stato contemporaneo contraddice l'ispirazione democratica che dovrebbe connotarlo, riducendola a pura retorica. In realtà, la "mano che prende" è oggi così impersonale e i vantaggi, per chi "dà", sono talmente astratti che l'imposizione fiscale viene percepita come confisca e saccheggio. La provocatoria proposta di Sloterdijk è trasformare gradualmente il prelievo fiscale da gesto coercitivo in gesto volontario e personalizzato, in un dono che le classi agiate offrono ai settori più svantaggiati della società.
