Il ment mais les deux fr res (Corneille et Jean de Witt) sont tout de m me jet s en prison. D cha n , ivre de col re, le peuple afflue aux portes de la prison. Les fr res essayent de s'enfuir mais sont finalement rattrap s par la foule et mis mort. Auparavant, conscient de ce contexte de crise politique, Corneille de Witt avait pris le soin de confier des papiers compromettants son filleul, papiers prouvant que les fr res Witt m nageaient Louis XIV, roi de France et ennemi des Hollandais. Ce filleul a donc conserv titre de d p t ces documents mais ne sait pas de quoi il s'agit. Il se nomme Corn lius van Baerle, est tulipier et cherche obstin ment cr er la tulipe noire, qui devrait lui rapporter un jour une r compense de cent mille florins. Bient t il est arr t et jet en prison, alors m me qu'il touchait enfin son but et poss de trois cayeux de tulipe noire...
