Cheap but effective
I bought this pump to use to fill a small fish pond from a nearby creek rather than filling it with tap water. I figured I would more than save the cost of the pump by not using and having to pay for city water! The pump as received would not run when plugged in. I took the cover off the pump and found that the brass impeller had been pressed too far onto the motor shaft and was binding against the back of the pump housing. I was able to loosen the impeller by holding onto it and rapping the exposed end of the shaft a couple of times with a rubber mallet. After that 'adjustment' the pump ran fine. The pond is roughly 130' from the creek and about 30' higher in elevation. I situated the pump on the creek bank about 4' above the water level and used a 10' length of 1" pvc pipe to dip ... I situated the pump on the creek bank about 4' above the water level and used a 10' length of 1" pvc pipe to dip down into the creek. I happened to have a 1.5" brass foot valve that was suitable for use on the end of the pipe with a pvc adapter. I also used a tee with a cap on one side in the pvc pipe to facilitate priming the pump. From the pump, I ran approximately 130' of 3/4" poly pipe up to the pond. Initially the pump wouldn't hold its prime. I discovered that I hadn't sealed the threaded pvc fitting well enough where it entered the pump causing it to suck air. A bit more teflon tape solved the problem. Once pumping I timed the flow into a 5 gallon pail and measured 66 seconds for a flow rate of just about 4.5 gpm. It took about four hours to fill the pond for an estimated volume of 1100 gallons. The motor ran warm but not excessively hot. Ambient temperature was around 50F. I noticed after taking everything apart that there was a pretty narrow space between the end of the pvc fitting threaded into the pump intake and the internal cast iron of the pump. This may have restricted the flow rate of the pump. I cut about 1/4" off the end of the fitting and will check to see if that improves the flow rate the next time I have an opportunity to use the pump. After disconnecting the pump and draining it as much as possible, I've noticed that the bit of remaining water turned rusty pretty quickly. I've plugged the pump in for a second or two a couple of times over two days and it doesn't appear to be seizing up (yet?) Overall I'm pleased with the performance of the pump and the price was certainly right.

I mounted mine to a wall and so it made some noise. Noise, to me, means bearings chattering. A gentle "hum" means electrical processes at work. There is a difference, but I heard both. Never the less, this pump did work okay for a fair length of time. As far as I know it is still working. But for the price it could fail after a couple of years and still be a good buy (I only ran it a few hours per day). Like most centrifugal pumps it does need priming or some liquid head to get it going initially. Aside from the bearing noise (which never actually failed on mine, just a tad noisey) the heat was a concern. The case does get a tad warm/hot after a while. That indicates to me that energy is being wasted (i.e. it is not efficient); but I never tried instruments to measure that. So it is what ... I mounted mine to a wall and so it made some noise. Pros.. it's pretty cheap.. cons. The threads to connections are so out of spec you will need 25 wraps of thread tap to stop them from leaking... I used this pump 3 times for about 5 min each time.. the 4th time I went to use it and it was seized up... went to plug it in and the electric motor just hums and the impeller does not spin.. does not pump water at all...! It's all rusty inside.. think about that.. a water pump that rusts..after 3 uses..! Total junk.. if you don't mind buying a pump that will work a few short times then go ahead and go for it.. but if you need a pump that will work when you need it to then look some where else.. Good little pumps over all
These pumps seem to be a good bang for the buck. I ordered two and one pump was wired backwards but easily fixed. On the pump that was wired correctly there was some asthetic damage to the plastic cover. I assume it was banging around during shipping as the two cast iron pumps were shipped together with only cardboard protecting them. These slight imperfections we're fixed with a little knowledge but still inconvenience.These pumps seem to be a good bang for the buck.
