Synopsis
"This book will be fresh even for those whose lives these bands were...All thirteen profiles are page-turners." --Robert Christgau, Village Voice This is the never-before-told story of the musical revolution that happened right under the nose of the Reagan Eighties--when a small but sprawling network of bands, labels, fanzines, radio stations, and other subversives reenergized American rock with punk rock's do-it-yourself credo and created music that was deeply personal, often brilliant, always challenging, and immensely influential. This sweeping chronicle of music, politics, drugs, fear, loathing, and faith has been recognized as an indie rock classic in its own right. Among the bands profiled: Mission of Burma, Butthole Surfers, The Minutemen, Sonic Youth, Black Flag, Big Black, H sker D , Fugazi, Minor Threat, Mudhoney, The Replacements, Beat Happening, and Dinosaur Jr., The definitive chronicle of underground music in the 1980s tells the stories of Black Flag, Sonic Youth, The Replacements, and other seminal bands whose DIY revolution changed American music forever. • Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Azerrad

I bought this book because this was the music that I grew up with, and the book reminded me of the shows and the attitude of the times. The book is well written and worth the read if you grew up in the late 70's and eighties. It is amazing what some of these bands went through, such as living in squalor like SST owner, Black Flag, and Minor Threat, on government assistance or at home with mom and dad, like Grant Hart, while all of the time trying to just make the music that they believed in, but was definitely not supported or accepted by a large audience at the time. It would be interesting to see a follow up with the bands and people today to see if the attitudes and feelings have changed? Such as Ian MacKaye's put down of Bob Mould and Husker Du about the idea of possibly being ...

  • Excelllent book.

Excellent read. For fans of punk rock, indie, and basically all alternative music...My favorite chapters are the ones about black flag, the minutemen and hüsker dü.
