The millennium is approaching, and gullible Larry, a pizza delivery guy, figures this means something big will happen. He travels to the Nevada desert, near the famous Area 51, believing that soon aliens will land there to depart with those who have traveled to meet them. On his way to the extraterrestrial rendezvous Larry meets with a number of strange characters, who, like him, are converging in the desert for the grand meeting. Second Encounters Of The Alien
With a combination of camera and sound engineering way above the typical independent production, the possibility that Lift could someday be an indie classic would seem plausible. But the weak spots are not at the usual places. The strong continuity and clean transitions are indicative of technical expertise, but where there was an effort to include a sound track, the producers must have been overwhelmed with the idea of sheer silence. Notwithstanding the depiction of a not atypical character; somewhere between really withdrawn and merely laconic, the continuity depends completely upon the main character, Larry The Pizza Delivery Guy. But the introversion borders too nearly on being a pathological depiction of a mildly disturbed character seeking some sort of self-actualization. So instead ... So instead of a perceptive perspective of a quiet, shy and basically normal character, the feeling of a juvenile self-consciousness pervades the dialogue and permeates the continuity. Less futzy music that has moments of being overly coy and clever and better acknowledgment of the unique endowments of the female characters would have improved the feeling of being a mature depiction of the characters, Pam, the ufo fan and crack addict, needs a tad of two of exposure during the sex on the floor sequence. And Verlain, the devout and long-suffering, rider of the 50c Honda seems to have genuinely samaritan, humanitarian motives, but those are not being presented adequately to actually say so. Perhaps there was an un-espurgated version of the film that had received still further editing for the distributors, as they are of the higher volume sort than most indie films would have. Or with less than 10 years elapsed of distribution, perhaps the producers would want to increase the fleshiness and psycho-drama with members of the initial dramatis personae. Both of those options have been chosen before with producers when they could get enough response to a production. Because if not, then the film must be relegated to the vast ephemera of mediocre indie productions that constitute a source of distraction to the audience rather than a truly entertaining movie that stimulates the viewers.

Although I can appreciate the message that not all ufological journey or leads will end up in a genuine alien experience (thus why this movie gets an extra star), this movie was pretty bad. It's a dark, unrealistic and unredeaming film. In other words, in my opinion, as well as my wife's, it's a "nothing movie" !
