About this product

Product Information

Jimmy Stewart plays the great American yet again as Chip Hardesty, a backwoods paper pusher for the Bureau of Investigation, the predecessor to the FBI. Under pressure from his wife, Lucy (Vera Miles), Hardesty decides to resign in order to pursue a more lucrative career as a lawyer. But when he travels to D.C., Hardesty meets the bureau's new boss, J. Edgar Hoover, and decides to stick with the organization. Over the next 30 years, Hardesty travels the country to face all the evils and villains of the United States, including the Ku Klux Klan, murderous oil barons, John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Nazis, and communist spies. Throughout, Hardesty struggles between his commitment to his growing family and the life-threatening demands of his job. Choosing the street operator's perspective on the history of the FBI provides the film with numerous action sequences that are accompanied by a fine score from maestro Max Steiner.

Received this 2-disc movie set promptly and in like new condition as described. I appreciate that it was packaged in a bubble wrap envelope for shipping safety. On playing the movies I discovered one of the discs was faulty (skipping and freezing). When I reported this to the seller, I received an immediate refund. Great communication. I appreciate sellers who stand behind their products and will certainly purchase from this reliable seller again. Highly recommend.

    Engaging movie!

Even though great liberties are taken with the details, this movie portrays members of the FBI with a positive light, and rightfully so. Mr. Hoover built the FBI with one purpose in mind, to have an organization dedicated to the preservation of law and order, and to create a certain fear in the minds of those who would do us harm. Much has been written and said, condemning Mr. Hoover, but one thing is certain, the FBI has always been the premier law enforcement agency of all. James Stewart's portrayal of a typical agent is dead on. He is a member of a special group of men and women who are in actuality, human beings. They have families and loved ones, and they have problems and sorrows, like the rest of us. This is one detail not left out of this movie. Some may say The FBI Story is a ...

  • The FBI Story

The story, although virtually nil in film technology as far as effects go, that is also its attractivness. The narrative format with James Stewarts voice literally carries the film. A feature that only a handfull of actors could pull off. Watching how the F.B.I. grew from nothing more than an idea to a full force to be feared by the underhanded criminals of the day, was not only intertaining, but actually quite interesting. It made the extra long length of the film non existent. I decided to purchase this movie because this film is not made for watching on television. It's format is such that evolves from different stages of the growth of the F.B.I. On T.V. those stages are interupted with commercials and one loses the valuable effects that the film ententionally depends on. It should be ...

  • BUY IT, WATCH IT, AND KEEP IT FOREVER!

I first watched this movie when I was a kid back in the 70's. I loved it back then and haven't seen it in decades. For some reason the movie popped into my head and begged me to watch it again. I was so glad I to find it is still available. I bought it and watched it as soon as I got it. I had forgotten some of it during the 35 years that had passed since my last viewing and it was like watching it for the first time. WHAT A GREAT MOVIE! Acting was so much different back then. The historical story line was excellent and I loved how it kept moving through the time period. The move never really stalled or got boring. I highly recommend this movie to anyone. Kids nowadays won't ever know this movies exists without parents like my mom who got me to watch it. There are so many of these movies ...

  • Well, ah, I suppose I could go to congress, as Jimmie Stuart might say.

I read a couple books that provided a background that was used in the movie and could relate my readings to the movie.

  • Jimmy Stewart at his best.

Excellent movie. Jimmy Stewart in a great role with filmed segments taken from inside the old FBI HQs in Washington in late 1950's. Obviously heavy dose of J. Edgar Hoover 'influence' as Stewart tells in a narrative of sorts the various high value criminals over the first 30+ years of the Bureau. If you are a fan of the old tv show 'The FBI', then you will appreciate this movie even more.
