    Works well

I bought this pump hoping it would pull a good vacuum in my diesel system and it certainly does, 16"Hg in fact. This pump has a well made and high quality vane pump powered by a powerful dc motor that is immersed in the fuel, so there must be a recirculating bypass if flow is low, otherwise the motor will overheat. I expect the complaints about early failure are due to lack of a bypass. This is a good pump.

    Bought as a Spare

I have a 1959 Mercedes 220SE that has a mechanical fuel injection system (gasoline). My research finds only that the delivery fuel pump must produce a minimum of 6 psi and 60 gallons per hour capacity. The original pump is of the same design as the P4601HP pump. That pump is also a rotary vane electric pump. The fuel delivery system is from the tank to the pump to the injector pump with a return line to the tank for any fuel not required by the injection pump. Is a pressure regulator still required for this system? What is the expected life for the P4601HP pump? The "kit" that comes with the pump seems very complete and it appears that installation will be relatively straightforward. I am quite pleased at this point and expect it will perform well when installed. Jim Vargo

  • Good for the money.

For the money, these are the quickest way to supply your old Dodge diesel (98.5-02) with good fuel pressure and add a programmer for a little more power. Direct bolt on, with a little modification to fuel lines, and it even comes with the hose barbs needed for that. Carter is not necessarily the best for longevity, but they usually last a couple years. Much cheaper and easier than replacing the injection pump from fuel starvation, and easier than installing an aftermarket pump and filter setup.
