About this product

Product Information

BARRY LYNDON is Stanley Kubrick's epic costume drama based on William Makepeace Thackeray's picaresque novel. It tells the story of a young rogue who wanders through life getting lost in various adventures, meeting his share of women and oddball characters. When Redmond Barry (Ryan O'Neal, trying desperately to maintain an Irish brogue) becomes jealous of Captain Quin's advances on Barry's beloved cousin, he challenges the man to a duel. Winning the duel, young Barry is forced to leave his home and his mother, and off on his adventures he goes. He meets thieves, lonely soldier brides, Prussian army leaders, and British widows, inventing new stories about himself at every turn of the road.BARRY LYNDON is lush and magnificent, sparkling with color, every frame reminiscent of the finest European art. The blues of the Prussian army uniforms and the reds of the British contrast sharply with the majestic green land and mountains in nearly every background. Kubrick often begins a shot close in, then zooms out to reveal the beautiful natural landscape and ornate rooms surrounding the now seemingly insignificant characters. With rousing performances from O'Neal, Marisa Berenson, Hardy Kruger, and Leonard Rossiter, jaw-dropping camerawork, spectacular natural lighting, and a marvelous classical-music soundtrack painstakingly put together by Kubrick, BARRY LYNDON is a dramatic romantic epic that may be Kubrick's most beautiful film.

  • Barry Lyndon was a good title, it shows the falsity of Redmond Barry as he came to be known.

Stanley Kubrick was one of Americ's true masters and artists to have lived in the 20th century. His like will not be around again very soon, but we have his work as a memento of his craft and excellence and videlity to his artistic vision. He was also a well beloved father and family man, who is dearly remembered by his wife and daughters. A person cannot aspire to be one like he.....a person is born in that way, and Kubrick always exhibited humility and benevolence to his fellow man.

  • Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon

This is one of the great sleeper movies of all times. Kubrick's movies are always visually stunning and this one is the best. Although the picture is long and drags in some places it is well worth the time spent. The costumes are the best ever and the photography is out of this world. One part of the movie is filmed in candle light only. Kubrick had to have special cameras built to film in the low light and keep the bright colors in the Eastmancolor film. The cameras had f-0.7 50mm Zeiss lenses, making the depth of field small, but the look is wonderful. Winner of 4 Oscars for Cinematography, Art Direction-Set Decoration, Costume Design and Music Scoring Original Song Score and/or Adaptation. Nominated for Oscars in, Best Director, Best Picture and Best Writing, Screenplay ...

  • Something for Everyone

This movie was created to satisfy a broad audience. Even if you don't like any of the story I do think the cinematography will be worth watching.

  • Barry Lyndon

To be honest theres nothing i didnt like about this movie. The movie is a great piece of art. Its one of stanley Kubrick best work. The images in the movie are beautiful. I personally think its the most beautiful movie ever. But this movie isnt for everybody cuz the movie is a little over 3 hours long and its a slow paced movie and you have to watch it when you have time, and if you're that type of person that likes faced paced movies or action, over the top CGI then this movie isnt for u. But if you're into Kubrick Films, or have taste of good filming making, or just love any kind of films then give it a try and you wont be dissapointed.

  • Long drawn-out old fashioned costume drama.

The only good things about this movie are the costumes and scenery. The plot takes an awfully long time to work itself out. It's hard to guess who is the worse actor, Ryan O'Neill or Marisa Berenson. She is wigged, hatted and dressed to look like a live version of a Gainsborough portrait, and that's amazing. Unfortunately, when she opens her mouth, you'll wish she'd remained silent. Ryan O'Neill was clearly chosen for his matinee idol looks. He does nothing to develop the character as the decades pass by. It was a really big hit at the time it came out, but I can't see why. Don't watch it unless you have a LOT of time to kill.
