KEEPS THE SQUIRRELS AWAY!!!
I've tried for years to come up with a way to keep squirrels out of our bird feeders. No matter what I did the squirrels always won out. They've ruined a number of our feeders by chewing through the plastic housing that held the seed as well, So far this feeder has kept them out. I've seen them try to get at the seed by hanging upside down on the but they jump off because they can't get at the food - the feeder closes under their own weight.Now we have finches,cardinals,and other birds who can enjoy the seed without the squirrels hoarding it all. I was skeptical at first but this feeder does the job. We now leave nuts and corn on the ground for the squirrels and the birds have the seed. The way it should be!! Great feeder that's truly squirrel proof
I had the smaller squirrel-proof feeder that holds only .9 lb of seed, and sunflower seeds were constantly getting stuck in that smaller version, I was constantly shoving a stick into the tube to unclog the seed. That hasn't happened yet with this slightly larger feeder, the sunflower seeds no longer get clogged. I have mine hanging from a 3' S hook from my gutter, and I can reach it to bring it inside from a window using one of the grabber tools, it's the perfect diameter to be able to do that. The metal used for perching really seems too thin, the birds are always struggling to hang on, even smaller house finches. I cut a dowel about 6" long and placed 2 of them between 2 of the perches on each side, and the birds much prefer grabbing onto the thicker dowel. I attached them with zip ... The only problem I would warn about is if you live in an area like the Midwest where you have snow and then constantly melting from sun and then refreezing, water will drip down the inside of the thin top tube to the point that it will freeze up the mechanism so that squirrels can freely hang from it without having the shroud come down as it should. I bought a 16" clear plastic dome for above the feeder, filled the center piece that holds the dome in place with clear outdoor caulking so it couldn't leak down the metal piece into the tube, and that solved the freezing problem.

does exactly what I wanted
The bird feeder does exactly what it was bought for, to feed the birds and deter squirrels at the same time. Squirrels still come scavenging, at the bottom of the feeder, but I no longer see them eating the food, and that is exactly what I was hoping to achieve. I did not make any changes to the weight sensing part. The feeder is easy to open and refill, only damage is cosmetic, from angry squirrels trying to pry off the top. I have another Brome squirrel proof feeder, and I love it. This little guy is perfect. Love to watch my squirrels take measure of it, then have to give up!! The birds like it. Cardinals perch on it well, that was my worry, that it was too small for cardinals. And the rest of the birdies love it. Worth the Money
It works well and the squirrels can't get at it. It also repels large blackbirds which can be bothersome. My only complaint is that it arrived in its generic box with no outer box to protect it. However it did arrive in good shape. I intend to buy the Legacy for winter use to limit refills.
