About this product

Product Information

During the late 1930s, with the Second World War feverishly brewing, Jack McGurn (Dennis Quaid), a struggling union activist working as a film projectionist in a San Francisco movie theater, falls in love with beautiful Japanese-American Lily Kawamura (Tamlyn Tomita). Against Lily's father's wishes (and contrary to the California law of the time forbidding intermarriage), Jack and Lily wed and have a child. Their marriage flourishes until the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor and America enters World War II. Japanese Americans--including Lily and her family--are herded into concentration camps by the thousands. Jack is drafted into the army but is prepared to risk life and limb to see his family again. The predominantly Japanese American cast paints a stunning collective portrait of the toll taken by the rash and racist internment of Japanese-Americans during the war. Director Alan Parker, as he did in MISSISSIPPI BURNING, uses his acute, convincing storytelling abilities to take a brave look at a dark episode in America's past.

    Great Title!

A great view into America's prejudices before and after WW II began. If it didn't have all of the expletives it would have been an excellent film that could have been shown to high school students in U..S. History II classes. It portrays a realistic slice of this period in our history, including the racial hatred that existed from one Roosevelt to another another Roosevelt's era.

    Defect coincidence?

I have bought this film twice, and each copy came with defect issues. The first copy; one sided, film only, had the issue of stopping at the thirty-five minute mark. The second copy; two sided, film on side A, documentary "Rabbit in the Moon" on side B plays through, but each side has a moment during play where the screen pixelates for a second or two. Oh well, the film is out of print so so be it.

  • Gotta See!

I am a huge fan of Tamlyn Tomika and this is one of her better movies. This film focuses on the inter racial marriage between a radical white American and a Japaneese American. After the bombing of Peral Harbor in WWII, the US rounded up all the west coast people of Japaneese descent and placed them in concentration camps. The film does a great job of exploring the hardships and troubles faced by these people. Dennis Quaid plays a hot headed union man turned army private. You won't want to miss this film.

  • Fictional WWII Romance - Internment Camp

This is a good movie based on internment camps for Japanese American citizens in the United States during World War II. Although it is fictional, there really were internment camps. This story is about romance between an Irishman played by Dennis Quaid & a Japanese girl played by Tamlyn Tomita. It shows the hardships of families divided during WWII.

  • Enjoy this movie!

Prod uct itself was an average copy which had no cover label of any kind. This points to a copy, but I still give it a good review because the price was fair for what it is. Also, the movie was far better than it ever got credit for.
