In this, the first film to unite the martial arts mastery of Jackie Chan and director/choreographer Yuen Woo Ping (IRON MONKEY), action fuses with comedy to create a masterpiece of the genre. It is the end of the China Dynasty, and the 200 year-old clan known as the Eagle Claw Society has wiped out all forms of martial arts except their own style--with the exception of a few remaining members of the Snake Fist School. The leader of Eagle Claw is intent on finding and killing the remaining Snake Fist members. However, the elderly member of Snake Fist is in hiding, teaching a young servant (Jackie Chan) his ancient fighting style in hopes that it will survive for future generations. Jackie Chan's comedic film debut
If "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow" isn't considered a Kung Fu classic it should be. This film was pinnacle to Jackie's rise to International Stardom. It is where he took his first leap away from the traditional characters in typical king fu movies to the comedic action roles he has refined and is now acclaimed. Just a great all around Jackie Chan film. Simplistic story? Yes. Perfectly choreographed? Yes. Campy? Oh, yes!If "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow" isn't considered a Kung Fu classic it should be. Before Jackie Chan decided he had to be the funniest kung fu star ever, he made several traditional martial arts films. These included the superlative SPIRATUAL KUNG FU, and FEARLESS HYENA. This one also ranks as one of his best. Worth it for the fight scenes alone. Make no mistake about it, simple minded plot about Snake vs. Eagle styles, but hey, what do you want from a kung fu movie. Revenge is a dish best served with some good egg rolls.
