I have no idea why it's called Watership Down.
The perils of life as told through the eyes of rabbits. Longing just to be free to enjoy life but faced with troubles including everything from man's encroachment to tyrannic fellow rabbits that enslave their own. A small group set out seeking freedom in a better place after one of them has a premonition of impending danger. It has that British strangeness from an American's point of view but this adds to its charm. Just turn on the English subtitles or you'll miss some of the dialogue. The animation is great and Art Garfunkel sings Bright Eyes and it's so beautiful!The perils of life as told through the eyes of rabbits. Watership down review
I thought I remembered watching the movie when I was younger. And I remembered bits and pieces. Watching it again as an adult was such a good journey. It was very heartfelt. I literally bawled out my eyes in the end. It made me want to go buy the book, read and compare. And they both were good. I wouldn’t say it’s for younger children cause there’s blood and stuff in it. Best animated film EVER!
Saw this as a kid in the 70s. Loved it! Prompted me to read the book. Great kid's first novel. Delves much deeper into their language, story, etc. Wanted to get it for a friend's kids. Found out ebay is the last place to find it. I bought 2 VHS and 1 DVD. They all were in perfect condition. I believe it to be the perfect movie that a parent can watch with their child and both enjoy it equally. I am 38 and can still cry at this movie. I will agree it is not for all ages. I was concerned about getting it for my friend's kids. If your kids are under 8 or so, it could be a little heavy. There is some rabbit violence with blood, etc. But the story is so well told. It absolutely squeezes every bit that it can into a 90 minute film. Full of lessons for kids. I am not religious at all, but I think ... Saw this as a kid in the 70s. Loved it! Full of "cold war" allusions, we get to see several different ways for the rabbits to live, and the ways they decide the best way for them to live. Should they be free to fend for themselves? Should they have the safety of reliable food, but the constant fear that a "lottery" type death is around the corner? Should they live in a dictatorship where all is safe and provided for, but they have no freedom of choice? This film also teaches that brains and cunning can win out over brute strength. Talks about man's encroachment on the environment. The animation is so much better than the pixar junk. Again, only 1 song to deal with, and it is Art Garfunkel. Nice chance for a parental "nature break." Another nice thing about this movie, is that it doesnt resort to pop culture jokes to entertain parents having to sit thru a kids movie. It is just a solid story. Buy this movie. You will be glad you did.
