Brubaker Brings Back Bucky As a Badass Cold War Warrior. Terrific Read!
One of my biggest pet peeve as a long-time comic book reader and collector is that nobody stays dead anymore. There is no meaning now in death because the readers now know that some writer will come along in the future will resurrect the character somehow. You can imagine my dismay and anger when I heard James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes was being brought back from the dead. Other than the "no one stays dead anymore" disdain, my unhappiness over Bucky being brought back was that his death makes Steve Rogers a much more compelling Captain America. To bring back Bucky would be to rob Steve Rogers of a prime causation of his melencholy. It's not just that Cap is a man out of time but a man who feels responsible for his friend's death and the survivor's ... I then read Ed Brubaker's Winter Soldier collected edition. Mr. Brubaker's tale wasn't just a writer concocting some miracle exception story to bring back a long-dead character. No, Brubaker's story is an entirely believable tale of someone who - like Captain America - was thought long dead but who was really - like Steve Rogers - a man suspended in limbo. Winter Soldier is a compelling, intense, edge-of-your-seat thrill ride where you don't know what's coming next and you love every moment. This isn't a story, it's an epic. Winter Soldier is not a superhero story. It's a cloak and dagger spy thriller that involves much of the Captain America mythos with it, tying decades of Cap's history in a web of intrigue. By the time I finished reading Brubaker's story, my previous objections to Bucky's return had been obliterated. Barnes' reincarnation as spymaster has removed the light-hearted fluff that was the 1940s Bucky and turned him into a super spy who makes an interesting cross between Captain America and The Black Widow. Cannot recommend this book highly enough. It truly is a must-read for any comic book fan.
