In einer Untersuchung baten Brown, Gifford (2001) Architekten anhand von verschiedenen Architekturphotos abzuschätzen, wie die darin abgebildeten - bäude wohl Laien gefallen würden, deren Urteil ebenfalls anhand der Photos v- her abgefragt worden war. Es zeigte sich, dass die Architekten mit ihren Ver- tungen über das Laienurteil mehr oder weniger falsch lagen. Die beiden Autoren fassen ihre Studie wie folgt zusammen: ,,The results suggest that architects are unable to exchange their own criteria for conceptual properties for those of l- persons when they predict public evaluations, which leads to self-anchored, in- curate predictions. This was supported by showing that the best-predicting - chitects related their evaluations to buildings' conceptual properties in a manner similar to that of the laypersons. " (ebenda: 93) Das heißt: nicht nur haben - chitekten andere ästhetische Vorstellungen als Laien (vgl. in Bezug auf La- schaftsarchitekten z. B. Buhyoff 1979), sondern sie täuschen sich auch über den Laiengeschmack und dies umso mehr, je weiter ihre professionellen ästhetischen Vorstellungen vom Laiengeschmack abweichen. Diese Diskrepanz zwischen p- fessioneller Ästhetik und dem Laiengeschmack (vgl. hierzu in Bezug auf die - chitektur z. B. die Untersuchungen von Bromme, Rambow 1998) ist Gegenstand der vorliegenden Untersuchung. Es soll also einerseits herausgearbeitet werden, welche ästhetischen Ansprüche die Bevölkerung an städtische Freiräume hat, - dererseits inwieweit und worin sich diese von der professionellen Ästhetik der Landschaftsarchitekten unterscheiden. Die These ist, dass diese Unterschiede - rade in den letzten Jahrzehnten eher größer geworden sind.
