Teaching in a decrepit Los Angeles neighborhood, Esquith took it upon himself to impart the works of Shakespeare to the kids who patrol the streets by night and reluctantly turn up to school by day. As this film shows, the results were remarkable, with the majority of the kids taking to the Bard like a duck to water, largely thanks to Esquith's innovative teaching methods.

    To See it or Be it, that is the question...

    I've seen this documentary a few times when it airs on PBS, and needed to share it with more people. It is deeply inspiring and universally appealing. Good for anybody who has ever gone to school, ever wanted to reach out to a troubled child, ever felt like they couldn't be effective or get recognition with their low-status job... Well paced, recognizable guest appearances, and a sweet insight into the lives of a real world-changing instructor and his inner-city students. It also happens to be a moving story, the best sort of documentary. On the PBS website there are now teaching resources inspired by this instructor!

    Excellent and motivating story

    This story is an excellent one about what education is really about...or should be--preparing students for real life, motivating them, showing them something outside of their own experience. I cannot recommend it highly enough, but urge everyone to view it. I purchased it to share with several family members and friends after we rented it to see.

    Title is appropriate.

    This DVD is inspiring for beginning teachers to see how the enthusiasm of this teacher motivated his students to be their very best and to exceed beyond all expectations.
