It would be a sin to reveal too much about this riveting and bizarre thriller from Korean director Chan Wook Park, except to say that it's about a man named Dae-Su (Choi Min-Sik) who is locked in a hotel room for 15 years without knowing his captor's motives. When he is finally released, Dae Su finds himself still trapped in a web of conspiracy and strangeness. His own quest for vengeance becomes tied in with romance when he falls for an attractive sushi chef (Gang Hye-Jung), who feeds him live octopus and who may or may not be involved with the bizarre mystery. This is all served up in a striking palette of purples and dark reds; oozing with post-neo-noir style, and stuffed with insanely malicious twists and turns. Choi Min-Sik is terrific in the lead, counterbalancing over-the-top hysterics with deadpan cool to run the gamut of Asian antihero traits. There are intense fight scenes (Dae Su's favorite weapon is a hammer), look-away moments of torture and self-mutilation, sex, and gallons of black humor. Not for the squeamish, but for those seeking something wholly original and daring, this cinematic entree is alive--it's hard to imagine a better slice of psycho-shock sensationalism.

Brutally Raw & Brilliantly Inspiring Revenge Film...
Oldboy has a Shakespearian tone as it depicts the tale of Oh Dae-su (Min-sik Choi), whose name means "he who can get along with people". Oh Dae-su is on his way home after having been arrested for public drunkenness to celebrate his daughters birthday. However, Oh Dae-su never arrives to his home as he is kidnapped and imprisoned in a small room where his only contact with the human world is a television. During the time Oh Dae-su is caged someone murders his wife and he becomes the prime suspect for the murder. The questions that Oh Dae-su unsuccessfully attempts to answer while locked up is why revenge is being taken on him and who is seeking this cruel revenge. After 15 years Oh Dae-su is released from his torturous imprisonment, which leaves him confused and ragingly ... Chan-wook Park directs a brilliant cinematic experience that is full of well-written conspiring intrigues that will keep the audience in suspense. The suspense is initiated in the opening shot where a man is hanging over the edge of a roof top causing the audience to asks themselves--why is this happening? The suspense continues as new and mysterious clues appears, but apprehension does not leave the audience even after the end of the film as the final line echos in the minds of the audience. Park's vision of revenge in Oldboy often depicts exaggerated violence that is well balanced with story as it is related to the themes of the film. However, this should serve as a warning to squeamish folks as the film is occasionally brutal and bizarre. Furthermore, the cinematography used in Oldboy vividly projects the emotional tone of the cinematic themes and characters. The characters are also superbly performed by an excellent cast, which will help the audience to experience a first class cinematic event.

Rare Edition, Worth The Search
I first Saw Oldboy about around the same time as it came out on DVD overseas thanks to some hard searching. This movie blew me away. I have never seen a movie that defined the word "Revenge" the way this story has. For those of You Not Familiar with it, Oh Dae Su is kidnapped and held prisoner for 15 years. Through that time period,it is revealed to him via news report that his wife has been murdered and he was the prime suspect, now the only things he has are his journals, tv and his Rage. Through rigorous training exercises thought up by himself he prepares for his quest. Until one day he finally wakes up on the outside world. This is where the quest begins. Running through a maze of shady characters, ruthless thugs and old class mates with a long road of blood and tears. I don't want ... The 3-Disc version is for the strictly hardcore fans, who wish to not just see the movie, but see the process of the 60 day shoot, with numerous commentary tracks, deleted scenes and Behind The Scenes video logs. Also as an added bonus it comes with a copy of the Original Manga that made this incredible movie be desired for the big screen. Sadly this was a limited time distribution. I could never find it anywhere myself til I stumbled across it on Ebay and I gotta tell ya I was happy I searched for it cause the results were more than satisfactory. So if you want a movie that is dark, humorous, touching and just plain Brutal. Then Oldboy is what you are looking for.

Oldboy limited edition rocks!
This has to be the most comprehensive edition of Park Chan Wook's movie. In addition to the bountiful extras including audio commentaries, featurettes, etc... I think having the first volume in Garon Tsuchiya's original manga is an excellent start (to raise interest in the graphic novels itself). The only drawback is that it didn't have the original theatrical trailer--either the stateside one, let alone the original international version. But since having other Tartan video titles (that have the Oldboy trailer), that's one less thing to complain about...This has to be the most comprehensive edition of Park Chan Wook's movie. In addition to the bountiful extras including audio commentaries, featurettes, etc... This was a great purchase and cheaper than a brick and mortar store. the collection is almost criterion quality, and the bonus discs are full of stellar material. I didn't even know it came with an oldboy manga, which is just gravy. This is a must for anyone who is a fan of asian cinema, or tarentino, or momento esque movies. for less violence, I'd recommend momento, and for more, try ichi the killer. Also, this movie is one part of a three film series, with the others being sympathy for mr. vengeance, and I think the last one is lady vengeance.This was a great purchase and cheaper than a brick and mortar store. the collection is almost criterion quality, and the bonus discs are full of stellar material.
