About this product

Product Information

The Nikon Micro-NIKKOR 55 mm f/2.8 Ai-S manual focus lens is a capable addition that fits a Nikon digital SLR camera body. This sturdy yet lightweight unit helps photographers produce professional-quality photos with ease. It is particularly good for macro-lens photography, taking crystal-clear photos of small objects. You can also get great photo quality at all distances from your subject because of Nikon's Close-Range Correction, or CRC, system. Whether you're a hobbyist who loves taking photos of family and friends or a professional who wants to capture both large and small objects in detail, this is a solid tool to add to your arsenal of photo equipment and accessories. Introduced in 1977, Nikon developed the concept of automatic maximum aperture indexing, or AI, as a new way to couple the light meter to the aperture ring. This was accomplished with two physical changes to the lens. These AI lenses have an indented portion on the camera end that catches the feeler found on the camera's lens mount. Next, a mechanical system provides information about the maximum opening. To provide you with the information you need, there is also a smaller second row of numbers that lets you see the opening number through the viewfinder. With the lens mounted and ready to shoot, the light meter gets all its needed information from the Micro-NIKKOR 55 mm. These Nikon Ai-S lenses also include the AI Shutter system that has an aperture priority mode. You can choose the opening and let the camera set the shutter speed and shutter priority. You can also opt to use the automatic and program modes as well. Because of these great aperture options, these lenses work well with Nikon FG, F4, and FA series cameras as well as the N2000 and the N8008 series. The versatile 55 mm f/2.8 NIKKOR with a f/2.8 maximum opening helps you focus in macro situations. This NIKKOR has the shortest focal length of any Nikon macro unit, with a 1:2 magnification ratio at a distance of 25 cm. This helps your subjects to appear on film at one-half their actual size. If you want life-sized reproduction, you can add the optional PK-13 extension tube. The 55 mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Ai-S is fast and takes vivid photographs that hold their own against a normal lens used in general photography. No matter which opening you use, from the maximum f/2.8 to the minimum f/32, or at what distance you shoot from, you can expect to get clean and sharp photographs. This 55 mm manual focus unit has a 35 mm FX image circle and front-element rotation. You can use a 52 mm filter, which will rotate during focusing, and it also accepts the HN-3 hood. The front element of the lens is deeply recessed, so a hood is only needed if you will be using filters. With a weight of 10 ounces, this unit makes for lightweight carrying. Construction is simple with six elements in five groups, and it gives you the solid feel of a piece of well-made equipment.

Focus ring not quite frozen, but very stiff. Not disclosed in item description. Was able to loosen it up , fortunately. Otherwise it's a very nice lens.

    legendary 55mm micro nikkor

The 55mm AIS Micro Nikkor lens is legendary for it's sharpness at every aperture. It has long been used as a standard to judge others lenses that followed it. As most all AIS lenses, it's built like a tank and with normal care is meant to last a lifetime. It can be used as a everyday carry normal lens, but it's real strengths are it's close focus ability. It's not considered fast at F2.8 but when using it in a close focus macro range DOF is thin and the 2.8 is appreciated. My purpose for my purchase is to use it for close focus portraits in mostly B&W on film to produce prints. My copy of the lens is in very good condition and I have no doubt it will perform to my expectations. Also the lens can be had on Ebay currently for a modest price around $100. which represents a incredible ...

  • Top critical review

    I sent it back

The focusing ring was way, way to stiff for normal use and that wasn't stated in the comments on the lens. You couldn't look through the view finder and focus at the same time it was so stiff.

  • Spectacular manual lens, Nikon still makes these today!

It is probably the best standard manual focal length lens for regular daylight (or flash) use that Nikon ever made (for night time or low light, the NOCT-Nikkor 58/1.2 is undoubtedly the best). The 55/2.8s is extremely sharp at macro distances, and extremely sharp at infinity. Even the bokeh is beautiful. A classic lens design with a small number of elements and an unbeatable tactile experience (like other lenses of a bygone era). A pure joy to use! The lens is meant to be paired with a PK-13 extension tube to attain 1:1 reproduction ratios...there are even markings on the barrel of the lens that reference the PK-13. You probably should get one of these cheap tubes if you buy a 55/2.8s. Best uses: -Regular prime lens for daylight or flash use -Copy and reproduction work -Still subject ...

  • A good manual focus macro lens

This macro lens is very sharp and has beautiful bokeh. It works nicely on my fuji x-e2 with an adapter, as the manual focus is easy to read and the exposure is automatic when the camera is set to aperture priority. My only complaint is the focus is stiff at first, but loosens up with use.

  • Good old manual sharpness

One of the best examples of old manual lens without the drawbacks of the "oldness". Sharp even wide open, smooth focusing with almost no backlash - a pleasure to work with. Decent closeup capabilities (wouldn't call 1:2 a macro as for macro it should be at lease 1:1). Also can be used as great general purpose 50-ish lens. This will surely take place in my collection.
