    Olympus VF-4 opinion and suggestion

    This angle EVF is a great advantage for shooting Pens, E=M1 or 5. I hope Olympus continues with it. Regarding the design, it only misses one helpful function and that would be 45 degree retention because as it is now, it collapses too freely when folding from the vertical to horizontal position. With a tiny spot of epoxy on the swivel for a slight gain of stiffness, I've resolved that... just too bad Olympus couldn't have added a similar function. Still, I have three of these knowing that failure or loss can always happen with small electronics although I've had no problems going back to an earlier VF-2. They seem quite durable. An excellent addition to the cameras for creative and unique angle shooting.

    A Must-Have for Some Cameras and Shooting

    I recently bought an Olympus PEN camera converted for infra-red photography. Since IR shooting is best done at the sunniest part of the day, it soon became obvious that with only an LCD screen, being able to see my photo composition was impossible in bright sunlight. Olympus made electronic viewfinders for such cameras, and I was very happy to find this one on eBay. It fits right into the hotshot/slot for immediate ability to switch between viewfinder and LCD. It has made shooting in bright sun much easier now.

    Fantastic addition to my Olympus OMD-EM5.

    This viewfinder is magnificent and I truly hope it lasts. I removed one star for design flaws - this is a big improvement from previous versions of Olympus' Electronic Viewfinder, but still has some issues. the hinge and body should not be in plastic for this price, and the fastening mechanism whereby the viewfinder "clicks" shut is far to flimsy to rely upon. I will be using a small silicone band to keep it from popping open in the camera bag or elsewhere. This is also my reasoning for selecting "no" to the question "is it durable?" I suspect it will not be given the criticisms above but the visual quality and the functionality it brings to the way I like to shoot is worth the (much less than full) price I paid here.

    Tool for Special Use

    In general, focusing with my PEN pl-7 is OK using its built-in rear monitoring screen. However, in companion with Voigtlander 42.5mm, Olympus 60mm marco or Olympus 75-300mm tele zoom, addition of VF-4 is sometimes necessary. VF-4 can indicate clearly whether the subject is in focus even in extreme bright/dark environment. Also, it allows the user to conduct high precision manual focusing with very shadow D.O.F. On top of it, you can press your face close against the back of the camera which keep the camera steady for low shuttle speed shooting. In general, VF-4 is enjoyable to use which increases the "FUN" factor in routine shooting. Hope you find this short review useful.

    Very useful in strong sunlight,

    Better than VF-2. There`s a risk to loose the VF2 due to badly constructed attachment. But this later model is OK Very sharp image and vivid colors makes it a dream to focus. Well worth the money!
