About this product

Product Information

While searching for rare English books, New York writer Helene Hanff's (Anne Bancroft) letter to a London bookstore, run by Frank Doel (Anthony Hopkins), begins a relationship between the two that spans two decades and two continents. Although their personalities and cultures are miles apart, their friendship blossoms into a deeper affection. Bancroft's performance earned her the BAFTA award, the British equivalent of the Oscar. Based on James Roose-Evans's play, which was based on Helene Hanff's memoir.

    Heartwarming story

This has been one of my favorite movies ever since my first trip to England so many years ago. If you are a lover of books and an anglophile, then this story is for you. The employees at this little book shop on Charing Cross road are so very appealing that you want them as your friends and you so want them to get to meet the "crazy" American lady who has been ordering rare antiquarian books from that little shop for so many years. Frank Doel is the chief clerk there (Anthony Hopkins) and he is the one through whom the orders for the rare books are placed and an innocent but poignant relationship develops. It is a slow moving story but one you will relish and one that will linger in your heart.

  • The perfect movie for biliophiles everywhere!

Helene Hanff's book of collected letters to and from a London "antiquarian" bookseller is translated beautifully to the screen in this Mel Brooks production. Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins are perfectly cast as the feisty American with a taste for English literature and the staid manager of the bookshop who supplies her with reading material. The supporting cast which includes Ian McNeice and Judi Dench, are all top-notch and help illuminate the characters of the leading actors. The film provides wonderful snapshots of America and Britain from post-War to the early '60's through the happenings in the lives of the leads, and the soundtrack does much to enhance these vignettes. Friends and family know I will go on and on about this movie. Suffice it to say, ...

  • A Little Gem Of A Film

A struggling New York writer, a reserved London book dealer, and a 20 year correspondence via letters. A true story. Anne Bancroft is delightful as the writer Helene Hanff; chain-smoking, gregarious, but (I suspect)lonely, this single lady-of-a-certain-age harbors a passion for English literature. Anthony Hopkins is equally delighful as Frank Doyle, the proper,if somewhat stiff English gentleman who replies to Miss Hanff's inquiries regarding antiquarian books. "I'm just a poor writer..." she begins. And so starts a wonderful story. Somehow, magic happens across the Big Pond, as these two literary buffs form an unlikely relationship. A lovely film for all you Anglophiles. Classic literature. John Donne. Elizabethan love poems. Yeats (as spoken by ...

  • The title is perfect for the story.

This movie is very entertaining and the actors were very believable in their roles. The movie is based on a true story and is told well. While it may not be a movie for a single guy it will be a great evening with your wife or girlfriend. The condition of the DVD was superb and the only difference between this DVD and a new one was the price. I recommend this movie to everyone

  • It follows the book taking you there

First and foremost, the story is absolutely delightful showing how correspondence deeply connects people, building rich relationships touched by compassion and humor. I appreciate how closely it followed the book rather than taking a license to adapt it differently. Secondly, the cast was fantastic. What a treat to see them in these roles when they were much younger.
