About this product

Product Information

In 1905 President Teddy Roosevelt dispatched Secretary of War William Howard Taft on the largest U.S. diplomatic mission in history to Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, China, and Korea. Roosevelt's glamorous twenty-one year old daughter Alice served as mistress of the cruise, which included senators and congressmen. On this trip, Taft concluded secret agreements in Roosevelt's name. In 2005, a century later, James Bradley traveled in the wake of Roosevelt's mission and discovered what had transpired in Honolulu, Tokyo, Manila, Beijing and Seoul. In 1905, Roosevelt was bully-confident and made secret agreements that he though would secure America's westward push into the Pacific. Instead, he lit the long fuse on the Asian firecrackers that would singe America's hands for a century.

  • Must, must, must read

Best book I have ever read on American history. So many facts about the politics carried out by this country that have never been taught in schools. This should be required reading for high school, college lever students and probably for all those idiots in Congress. Truly enlightening, shameful and yet revealing about out Country.

  • An unexpected analysis of events from Pearl Harbor up to the present day!

I bought this to learn more about the path that led to Japan's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, and about President Theodore Roosevelt. I got a lot more than I had expected! This work delves into the relationship between racial theories of the era and the policies of the Great Powers. It would seem that TR and Hitler shared an interest in role of the Aryan as the engine that drove World History! The author shows how politicians can blunder their way into all sorts of disasters (such as our war in Iraq). The events in this book are very relevant to today's geopolitics. Very well-written!

  • Great read

Book arrived in great shape. Although I usually only read fiction, I found this historical book great reading. I could barely put it down. The time period of 1895-1906 was something I wasn't familiar with, nor was I aware that the President manipulated the media so entirely even back then! It certainly lowered my opinion of Teddy Roosevelt and Taft. Their racial bigotry was horrendously reminescent of the Hitler era! I can also see now how events on that cruise set up the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor several decades later. How sad!

  • The Imperial Cruise

This is a huge dose of American history I, and I'm sure most Americans, have not been exposed to.

  • a must read - The imperial Cruise

A great book - very revealing of the crap that goes on with the federal government - and is even more prevalent today with the curent administration I bought this book because of the author, having read and enjoyed his previous 2 books, specially as he is the son of a very special person - a U S Marine ----andan Iwo Jima survivor ... oops -- 90% Marine as a Navy corpsman. The concepts revealed in this book should be read by all
