About this product

Product Information

In this groundbreaking alternative history of the most dominant ideology of our time, Milton Friedman's free-market economic revolution, Naomi Klein challenges the popular myth of this movement's peaceful global victory. From Chile in 1973 to Iraq today, Klein shows how Friedman and his followers have repeatedly harnessed terrible shocks and violence to implement their radical policies. As John Gray wrote in The Guardian, "There are very few books that really help us understand the present. The Shock Doctrine is one of those books."

Reviews
"Impassioned, hugely informative, wonderfully controversial, and scary as hell." -- John le Carr "Bold and brilliantly conceived . . . Klein may well have revealed the master narrative of our time." -- William S. Kowinski, San Francisco Chronicle "This is a brilliant book, one of the most important I have read in a long time." -- Howard Zinn "Klein provides a rich description of the political machinations required to force unsavory economic policies on resisting countries and of the human toll. She paints a disturbing portrait of hubris, not only on the part of Friedman but also of those who adopted his doctrines, sometimes to pursue more corporatist objectives." -- Joseph E. Stiglitz, The New York Times Book Review "A brilliant, brave, and terrifying book. It's nothing less than the secret history of what we call the 'free market.' It should be compulsory reading." -- Arundhati Roy "Pulls the curtain back on free-market myths and exposes the forces that are really driving our economy . . . Klein's book is powerful and prophetic. . . . A brilliant dissection." -- Arianna Huffington, The Huffington Post "Naomi Klein is one of the most important new voices in American journalism today." -- Seymour M. Did a good job documenting the historical pattern of capitalism.

Most people don’t understand one negative dynamic of capitalism: That capitalism itself will indeed trigger a downturn, depression , recession, and economic collapse of another country, in order that it can exploit and “carpet bag” the other country, an other corporation an other group of people. Hedge funds in the stock market will “target” a stock, sell it off, to drive the price down, then buy it back. It could be a conscious collusion or an unconscious collusion. It’s just the way capitalism makes money without making any product. The same with an economic blockade of a country, one that has oil, like Venezuela or Iran. Knock the country down, come in and carpet bag, buy up the resources for cheap. Capitalism doesn’t say anything about “being fair, or being ethical”. Capitalism just ...

  • Klein offers a honest appraisal of 30 years of error

Just preaching to the choir now. I have family manipulated by fear, lies and being Dittoheads. I have a best friend who believes "the rich deserve all their money" and thinks my views only see the bad side of American history. My girlfriend in LA has become a Marxist (after two trips to Hugo Chavez land) and claims that we need a revolution NOW. She and my daughter are the ones eager to borrow this book. In light of the collapse of Friedman's World and Republicans stuck in their libertarian wet dreams (plutocracy=democracy, Saint Ronnie is always right and forget-about-the-W-behind the Bush Recession) her kismet, her logic in portraying Truth is truly refreshing. But that's my perspective. Those on the right, after all, are mostly sheeple. By the way, I like Anna Korin and not ...

  • Excellent, easy read. Presents new & original POV

Excellent, easy read. Uncomplicated and well written. DISLIKE: Citations are heavy but not presented within reading, just analysis or citation is provided in support of an opinion. LIKE: Refreshing, makes you ponder the world in a different light, humbles your perspective on life, and is a good starting point to get you thinking. BEST OF ALL: Encourages you to read more like authors by captivating your interest.

  • This is some book - The Shock Doctrine - it shocked me!

This is some book - The Shock Doctrine - it shocked me! I have to say, this is one of the best, most riveting books I have ever read. We really just don't know all that's really going on behind the scenes as events/current affairs are unfolding in real time. It's not until afterwards that things become clear - and as this book points out only to clearly, by then, it is too late. I can't recommend it highly enough but I don't want to say too much about the 'story' (for want of a better word) itself as it would give too much away. I must go and read this lady's other book 'No Logo' and see if she has a web site. I found it very cheaply on Ebay. I would have gladly paid five times that amount if I had known in advance what a read it is. Milton Friedman and his cronies have got a lot to answer ...

  • Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein

Shock Doctrine is a captivating must-read. Naomi Klein manages to synthesize decades of global events and trends into this book full of keen connections, which is also very easy to read. Shock Doctrine explains how catastrophic events, both natural and man-made, have created opportunities for the public domain to be seized by privately owned corporations. You will be amazed (and probably outraged) by the big picture Klein is able to draw.
