Li hanno raccolti con competente e amorevole cura, corredandoli di una illuminante premessa, due allievi del grande Maestro, Stefano Grazzini e Giovanni Niccoli. Per merito loro i lettori hanno adesso a disposizione un ampio e avvincente materiale, finora variamente sparso e di difficile reperimento, che conferma il rilievo di Antonio La Penna nel panorama culturale italiano. I testi qui raccolti vertono su una molteplicità di temi, che riflette l'ampiezza degli interessi culturali e scientifici di La Penna. La storia dei rapporti tra la cultura tedesca e quella italiana nel campo degli studi classici durante l'Ottocento e all'inizio del Novecento è uno dei principali argomenti trattati: è indagata l'influenza della scienza filologica tedesca sulla nascita della filologia italiana, ma è altresì esaminata la reazione antigermanica di classicisti come Giuseppe Fraccaroli ed Ettore Romagnoli. Alcuni contributi fanno luce sullo svecchiamento degli studi classici e, in generale, dell'istruzione pubblica in Italia all'indomani dell'Unità e sulla funzione svolta in questo processo dai principali attori sociali (scuola e università, istituzioni culturali, riviste, case editrici). Altro tema d'indagine è il culto della romanità prima e durante il ventennio fascista, al quale sono consacrate pagine magistrali. Gli ultimi due capitoli del libro vertono su questioni di critica letteraria militante, a cui La Penna si è dedicato nel corso degli anni con passione ed energia. Antonio La Penna (Bisaccia 1925) e una delle piu eminenti figure di studioso del mondo classico a livello nazionale e internazionale. E stato docente universitario di letteratura latina nelle universita di Pisa e Firenze e ha insegnato filologia latina alla Scuola Normale di Pisa. E autore di oltre seicento pubblicazioni che riguardano principalmente la cultura letteraria latina e la fortuna dell'antico nel mondo moderno. Il suo nome e legato in particolare a monografie e a contributi su Orazio, Sallustio, Properzio, Virgilio e Ovidio. Per i tipi di Della Porta Editori e uscito il libro-intervista Io e l'antico , a cura di Arnaldo Marcone, e il saggio La favola antica. Esopo e la sapienza degli schiavi , a cura di Giovanni Niccoli e Stefano Grazzini. Stefano Grazzini (Firenze 1967) e professore di filologia classica all'Universita di Salerno. Si e occupato di letteratura latina, edizione di scholia ad autori antichi, esegesi e ricezione dei classici, linguistica. Giovanni Niccoli (Osimo 1949), dopo la laurea a Firenze in lettere classiche, ha lavorato in editoria.
