About this product

Product Information

Driving Over Lemons is that rare thing: a funny, insightful book that charms you from the first page to the last. and one that makes running a peasant farm in Spain seem like a distinctly good move. Chris transports us to Las Alpujarras, an oddball region south of Granada, and into a series of misadventures with an engaging mix of peasant farmers and shepherds, New Age travellers and ex-pats. The hero of the piece, however, is the farm that he and Ana bought, El Valero - a patch of mountain studded with olive, almond and lemon groves, sited on the wrong side of a river, with no access road, water supply or electricity. Could life offer much better than that? 'An idyllic life in a remote, sunny part of Europe is a fantasy normally punctured by harsh realities, and abandoned. Chris is made of sterner stuff. Driving Over Lemons is a wonderful account of his Andalucian adventure.' Peter Gabriel, former Genesis bandmate

This book arrived with another one in the same package. The other one was a pristine hardback. This one wasn’t. The cover was a little dog eared and there were spots on the three edges of the outer pages. I wasn’t impressed. However, you only get what you pay for and these books are cheap. In fairness, the description does cover such potential possibilities. So, I can’t complain and also they do arrive quickly. In my case - two days after ordering, which is great as is the read. Very happy now

  • A wonderful journey through a place called Andalucia.

I'd tried previously to buy the book about 6 months ago after hearing about it on a cooking programme but couldn't get hold of a copy anywhere, by chance overheard someone mention it again, looked and found a copy for sale and then couldn't wait for it to arrive. Sat down that evening with a cup of coffee and book in hand and 85 pages later.. and I'm not a fast reader. I couldn't wait for the following day to arrive so I could pick up where I'd left off. Took me 3 days to read, had me captured in the story from the first to last page, just wish i'd had the courage to do the same thing 30 years ago. The end of the book does seem to come to a sudden stop, and i was left wondering what was going to happen next, did wonder if the author had done this on purpose so 20 years later could do ...

  • I love Spain and I love this book.

I love Spain and I love this book. When reading it I am transported there and I can feel the warm air and breeze and the hot sun, I can taste those juicy, tangy citrus fruits and salty olives and I can smell the Mediterranean herbs, the rosemary, sage, lavender and thyme. I also can see the vivid coloured flowers contrasting with the bleached and dried wood of the house, barns, fences and old farm equipment. I can feel the cool water of the trickling stream near by. I love it.
