Finishing the Figure by Susanna Oroyan
One of the best doll books out there. I've read just about every book on doll making published in the last 40 years and this one really impresses me. I checked it out of the public library and decided I had to have my own copy. This is an awesome book whether you are a serious doll artist, a casual crafter, or even a collector. The illustrations of doll making techniques are very detailed and easy to understand. Oroyan has thought of everything. There are hints on everything from period costumes to beading to animal dolls. The writing is superb also, with many helpful notes and tricks of the trade. The book includes dozens of richly colored photographs of dolls created by various artists; it could work as a coffee table book as well as a reference. It is a joy to see what these ... It is a joy to see what these artists pull out of their imaginations, from the realistic to the abstract. You will be inspired. The author herself is an accomplished doll artist and teaches from experience. Some of her works are included in the photographs. The dolls pictured are high end art. You won't find the Raggedy Ann folksy stuff here. Most examples are fabric but some mixed media (clay, etc.) are also represented. However, don't be intimidated if you feel you are less talented. The techniques can be adapted to a variety of skill levels. For doll admirers, it is neat to learn what goes into the creation process. I highly recommend having this book in your library if you have any interest in dolls.

I agree with the previous review. This is one GREAT book, which has many eye candies but also contains good explanations and patterns. Great book to have!

A Very Good Reference for Doll Making
This book features just the right blend of instruction and inspiration; there are plenty of patterns and instructions to carry out your design ideas. A great book for all doll makers.

Soulfood for the dollmaker
Susie Oroyan's books are like soul food to the dollmaker. Sadly she is no longer with us but her incredible talents live on in her published works (and her dolls!) and she is so generous with the wealth of information in her books. Find the, buy them, read them. Then read them again and apply her techniques....Too much fun!
