It's not a movie - it's an EXPERIENCE
I don't think I was old enough to see a rated R movie when Heavy Metal was first released, but I can sure remember having to buy the cassette over and over and over because I would play it until it was stretched and worn beyond use. Once it was released on VHS, I did the same thing to THAT tape - and had to buy it several times. FINALLY, I have both the movie and the soundtrack on disk, and I couldn't be happier. This movie hasn't aged a day since its release. Yes, there are slightly hokey moments - mostly in the wrap-around story - but overall, this is a highly absorbing and entertaining collection of animated short stories reflective of the publication that inspired it. Most of the artwork is simply spectacular, and you quickly find yourself so engaged, you don't ever stop to ... It's an experience in the quiet, strange places we rarely visit in our own minds. Beautiful and horrifying. Shocking and compelling. It's like a stream-of-consciousness download of one's subconscious mind, laid right out in plain view on film for all to see.

TAKE A RIDE...ON HEAVY METAL!
When Heavy Metal was released in theaters in 1981, I was 11 years old (do the math on how old I am now). Of course, far too young to see an R rated movie-not something my parents would've taken me to see. But I remember radio stations played songs from the soundtrack a lot, particularly Sammy Hagar's "Heavy Metal" and Don Felder's "Heavy Metal (Takin' A Ride)." Anyway, the fact that it was advertised as animated, sci-fi/fantasy/horror/comedy and sex with a rockin' soundtrack-well, I was determined to see this movie, one way or another. Fast forward a few years to my freshman year of college, and our campus sci-fi club advertised a screening of Heavy Metal in our campus theater-tickets sold out big time, and luckily, I got one of them! Heavy "Medal"
This is one of those movies you see when you're young that just blows you away and leaves a lasting impression. Star Wars, Porky's, and The Bad News Bears come to mind as well. I was 16 when it came out so I was just about the perfect age. It had a little bit of everything...sci-fi fantasies, cool rock music and heavy metal, hot babes getting naked, crazy looking aliens, warriors, and some really cool animation, especially for it's time. With a little bit of comedy thrown in also. The music was every bit as exciting as the movie. In fact, it really made the movie as good as it was. The two title tracks, one by Sammy Hagar and the other by Don Felder are two of my all-time favorite songs. I actually got the sound track before the movie, just so I could have those songs. The ...
