  • Guarnaccia Salt & Pepper book

This book is filled with full color photos of junk shakers. There were perhaps 3 sets that I have in my own collection, but most were cheap plastic or ceramic shakers that are common at best, and collectable to no one but fools. As a serious collector of over 30 years, I have some genuinely beautiful shakers and had hoped I would find something out about a few beauties that have been a mystery to me. No such luck. So, if you love the commonplace, the tacky, the cheap and easy to find; if collection means QUANITY, not QUALITY to you, this is the book for you. If you are like me, and look for the truly special, save your money and don't waste your time.

  • Review S&P shakers 4 by Guarnaccia

Books 4&5 of this series listed the values with the item discription rather than the end, which gave more room to put more shakers in. This book and the others tend to focus on people shaped shakers and I collect cats. The author is a conservative evaluator, which should help all those wild bidders think about when bidding on an item. Her series and others like them are a useful guide to an ebayer.

  • What I learned about collecting salt and pepper shakers

I bought the book because I have developed an interest in collecting Salt and Pepper Shakers. However, as most new collectors, don't really know what I am looking at or what is important to look at when I am "on the hunt" for salt and pepper shakers. This book is a great resouce as to what to look for, and give me some kind of idea of what it is to look for, ie Cork vs plastic stoppers, paint pealing, etc. I have even seen some of the exact same salt and peppers shakers on e-bay or out at one of the flea markets or even at goodwill. I have read one or two other books on collecting as well, and find this book by Helene Guaraccia one of the best.

  • kitschy shakers

I purchased this for my mother who collects antique shakers. I was disappointed to discover that this book covers only kitschy shakers (mostly figurals). Lots of colored photos but very little text. If you're looking for shakers earlier than the 1920's, you won't find them here.
