RYAN'S DAUGHTER
I love this two part mini series. Robert Mitchum has an unusual part for Mitchum, and he does an arguably good job in my opinion. That of the cuckold husband. The bad part in my opinion is the part the great John Mills plays of the village idiot. In my opinion, it should have been left out. I had to look away because it was gross, to say the least. But this movie has a surprising ending. It is a good movie to watch on a cold and rainy night.I love this two part mini series. A Great Movie That I Have Overlooked Too Long
Sarah Miles stars as the title character Rose Ryan Shaunessy in this Best Actress nominated 1970 movie about living on the western coast of Ireland in 1916 during WWI. The Irish had two enemies: Germany and Britain. But the one that they despised the most is Britain. Overpowering the war background, though, is Rose Ryan, daughter of the town pub owner, Tom Ryan (Leo Mc Kern). She is a spoiled rotten, naive Ryan's daughter who takes a shining to the sedate town school teacher Charles Shaunessy (Robert Mitchum), a widower who is much older than she. But once they are married Rose becomes bored. Enter Major Doryan (Christopher Jones), a British solder, recently returned from the WWI front and placed in charge of the British battalion overseeing the county in Ireland that sets ... Doryan suffers from what we would call post traumatic stress syndrome and walks with a limp, but his dramatic entry into the pub where Rose is substituting for her father shows no weakness. He takes charge of Rose immediately and ends her boredom. Their affair, which takes us into a cave near a field of lovely blue flowers, is exciting, but there is one problem. The town mute and imbecile Michael (John Mills) spies the two and lets the town know about it through mimicry. The movie is a long one--over 200 minutes. The war part does weave itself into the story when a huge beautifully photographed storm wrecks a German warship and spills munitions into the sea near the coast. Irish rebels rush in and with the town's residents try to recover them for their mission against Britain. But someone has tipped the British off, and they intercept the loot. This movie suffered from terrible reviews in 1970--I mean how could it compete with David Lean's previous blockbusters "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Doctor Zhivago." But in 2010 its image has improved with its DVD release and the passing of time. The movie was nominated for four Academy Awards and won two--John Mills as Best Supporting Actor and most deservedly Best Cinematography. Sarah Miles was also nominated as Best Actress, and the movie was also nominated for Best Sound. This movie is well worth your viewing. David Lean, its director, is known for his many visual treats, and this is certainly one of them. However, I will admit that the ignorant townspeople did start to get on my nerves. They remind me of the overpowering bullies that we talk about today.

I have always loved this movie since it first came out, and that was before the days when you could get a copy of any kind for home viewing. When copies did become available, they were on tape which could wear out or, worse, break. I did have a copy of "Ryan's Daughter" for awhile, on tape, but it was lost over the years through the course of several moves. Now it is finally available again, and that's really something in itself considering it's an old movie and harder to find anywhere, and no longer on tape, but on CD. Behold, eBay came along and almost anything can be found on eBay. When I found this copy of a movie I love, I immediately bought it. An added bonus is that nowadays CDs have bonus materials added and this CD has information about the filming ... My Favorite Movie
This movie is set during the Irish rebellion. Actors Robert Mitchum, Sarah Miles, Christopher Jones and John Mills starred in Ryans Daughter. I could tell from the opening music that it was going to be good. John Mills limping along the beautiful seashore listening to a seashell. Robert Mitchum plays a widower who is a teacher and Sarah Miles is Rosy,a student, who believes she is in love with her teacher Charles Shaunessy, and does everything in her power to marry him. Finally the wedding is on and everyone in the village has a great time, unfortunely Rosy finds the wedding night not all what she had dreamed of and the age difference was now a factor, but Rosy suffers through somehow and Charles has no idea of her feelings. The rebellion takes a nasty turn and a young Major is sent to ... This movie is set during the Irish rebellion. He has a terrible limp from a previous war and is not at all happy with the world, then he and Rosy meet and the sexual attraction is immediate between them. Christopher Jones plays his part very well, he was amazing. Acting with the expression of his eyes, he almost did not need to say anything,the eyes told the story.The secret affair begins and when they meet in a cave on the shore the old seashell man see's them. The Major tries to befriend the old man so he won't tell anyone about the affair,soon they become close, with the old man mimicking everything the Major does. Meanwhile, Charles and a group of men plan on a way to get gun's to the rebel's. When the night come's for the plan to go into action everything falls apart. The Major has been warned about the gun's and the plan, he is there with his troops to stop them and a battle takes place with some of the villager's lives taken. Rosy does not run to see if Charles is ok, instead she is wild with fear about the Major being harmed, and seeing him well runs into his arms and does not come home until the next morning. The villager's and Charles begin to think that Rosy betrayed their cause and she became an outcast. The women of the village came to her house and threw stones and cut off her long hair. Charles stands by Rosy and she tells the Major they can't see each other or be together any more, she is standing with Charles now. Rosy goes home after telling him this, it is dark and Charles is suspicious about where she has been.It is very quite between them and the next thing you hear is one gunshot from the nearby cave. The Major was sure that Rosy would be there and they would go off together, but soon he realizes as he is standing on the shore looking towards Rosy's house that she is not running to him like before,and goes to their meeting place by the cave and committs suicide. Rosy is devastated ,but she can not show this, her heart is broken for life. The old man is walking on the seashore and see's the body of his friend the Major. He sits with him for a while and then takes the Majors medals and boots, puts them on, and walks saluting the people of the village with tears in his eyes and his seashell to his ear. The people of the village now realize who betrayed them, but Rosy no longer cares. This film was nominated and won the Academy Award for best actress Sarah Miles. Best supporting actor John Mills and best cinimentography Freddie Young. It is as good as Gone With The Wind, and there are a few sites on e-Bay that have the DVD. I'm sure there are book's too.
