For anyone sexually "broken", it does not matter how you got there, the feelings are all the same, bad..
A wounded heart CAN be healed however I had to come to the realization that I had to WANT IT TO HEAL, and if so, it will. I read this book by Dr. Allender several years ago when I first realized the full extent of what had been done to me in my childhood, and had to come to grips with the excruciating pain of it all. Of all the counseling sessions I went to, and group therapy, reading and journaling, I must say that next to the Bible, this book helped me the most. I wanted to enjoy the rest of my life and knew the only way for this to truly happen was to be freed of the past. I no longer wanted to be "married" to the pain that had become my "constant companion" and my untrue identity, thus allowing the poison of it all to keep on crippling me. I NEEDED HELP! I chose to do what God commanded us to do, and that was what broke those heavy chains, what freedom indeed. I also took to heart what was written under inspiration by Dr. Allender. One thing he mentioned near the end of the book which still resonates in me to this day, was that once you allow and pursue that much needed healing/forgiveness that both your tears and your laughter will become more rich, and deeper than ever before. You know what? He was right, it has. :) Thank you Dr. Allender!

Allender details the background or set-up of many victims, helping you to put the abuse in a bigger context. He talks about the shame and contempt that come from abuse. Next he helps you see the coping techiniques that people use to survive the abuse and how years later those same coping skills are casuing more problems than help. Making peace with God is part of the process. Although this is written for those who have been sexually abused it is equally valuable for anyone who has experienced any kind of abuse. I highly recommend this book for the person serious about confronting their issues. The BEST book on sexual abuse.
I've read just about every book out there on sexual abuse and this is the only one that I found that actually leads the reader to healing. I've done prison ministry for several years and this book was read and passed around more times than I can count. No matter how many copies I buy, I can't hold on to them. I never recommend any other book than this one for this issue.

As a victim of childhood sexual abuse, I can say from experience that this book is life-changing. What makes this book especially effective is that it is grounded in Christ - only through knowing yourself and knowing Christ is real healing possible. This is not a fast read book - it took me over a year to work through this. You need to give yourself the time it takes. I went through this with my counselor, which made this book even more powerful. There is a companion workbook that is a must-buy, too. If you can only buy one of the two, buy the workbook.
