Getting Started — Clicker Training for Dogs
This short guide is the single best book I've found for the dog owner who is unwilling to use corrections (i.e., punishment) on what is supposed to be "Man's Best Friend", & desires a more effective training method than simple lure training (using treats). Although Pryor is the originator of clicker training for dogs — she "ported over" the whistle training used for dolphins/killer whales @ oceanarium type parks — there is no need for a background in dog training, behavior studies or psychology. This presentation is easily digestible by anyone who just wants better behavior from their pet. She also details the benefit of an enhanced relationship with your dog. A brief comparison of the three major training methods explains why... 1.) Aversives (also known as corrections, common ... Aversives (also known as corrections, common sense training & other names): When your dog guesses wrong during a training session, bad things happen (choke chain jerked, slap, yelled at, etc.). Your dog soon learns that the safe choice is to shut down & do nothing. It's hard to justify this method as an acceptable manner of treating a creature you (supposedly) like. 2.) Lure training works, but "Will work for food" can easily become "Will ONLY work for food" if the trainer isn't careful. 3.) Clicker training encourages your dog to be imaginative. During training, a wrong guess results in nothing bad —no punishment; the status quo simply continues. Once she realizes two things (guessing is safe & she controls access to treats), she'll get creative. A correct guess is "marked" with a click, then rewarded. Training sessions become fun for both your & your dog. Videos exist of clicker trained dogs voluntarily passing a dog biscuit by mouth to another, or retrieving a hotdog. These dogs were trained by clicker methods, not corrections. Pryor demonstrates no proprietary attitude towards her principles; she certainly appears to have a desire to elevate overall dog training quality. Clicker training can be utilized quite effectively at very little cost; no expensive training items are necessary. You may want to read other authors as you develop skill, but this one is all you need to get started. Get yourself a treat bag, a clicker, & get going! Love this book!
This is a very educational tool for anyone doing any kind of animal training. It teaches all of the basic commands and how to get the desired results using a training clicker.
