  • Another fine Peterson Guide

I was raised in the same Jamestown NY neighborhood that Roger Tory Peterson called his home, and began my love of the outdoors in the same "100 Acre Lot" as he. This property was a city park on the edge of our little town and was frequented by many, many local kids on warm summer days (including a young Lucille Ball!) The tradition of sharing accurate and precise information about our natural world which began there continues today in the many Guides published under the Peterson banner, and inspired by Roger's technique. • Oldie but a goodie

Although this book is quite dated in some ways, it is compact and still has lots of useful information on animal tracks. It also has information on animal scat and other sign. I would recommend this book if you have an interest in animal tracks and want a light, compact field guide to take with you on your hikes.

  • A Field Guide to Animal Tracks by Olaus Johan Murie

Excellent guide for the avid outdoorsman/woman looking to know a bit more about animals and their habits. Extensive list of North American mammals includes information not only on their tracks, but their habits and habitats as well, and even their scat (droppings). Something that should be carried in the backpack of any hiker or camper seeking to familiarize him/herself with animals that may not be seen, but are most assuredly there.
