About this product

Product Information

The music guides in the popular "For Dummies" series all follow the same basic format, which includes much of the same information found in the other self-instruction resources reviewed here, but in more detailgetting started with the instrument, chords and melodies, playing technique, stylistic characteristics, and choosing instruments. Unlike most of the other series, the details of some techniques, such as fingerpicking, are covered in the chapters on style instead of getting chapters or sections of their own. These volumes also don't cover reading music, though scored examples are included: players who don't read are advised to pick up chords and melodies by ear from the accompanying CD. Best for teens and adults with some musical background, not necessarily with the guitar. Forthcoming titles include Classical Guitar For Dummies (Jul. 2009; ISBN 978-0-470-46470-0) and Guitar All-in-One For Dummies (Aug. 2009; ISBN 978-0-470-48133-2), a 720-page reference that compiles information from eight books in the series. Guitar for Beginners

Very good for someone like myself that can't read music and needs to start from the beginning. I am only through the first 5 chapters but there is a lot there to absorb when you are starting out. They use a nice teaching format in how they lay the book out.

  • Guitar for dummies review

I bought this book along with some other books on "How to learn guitar". And by far this book takes the cake its a easy read with there little quips and jokes every now and then. The song that you will be playing in a matter of days maybe hours are a little suspect Like Michael row the boat ashore and the camp fire songs. But they are good learning songs. I keep this book by my bed and read before i go to sleep. It explains every chord in detail and the songs come in Musical noteation and Guitar tabs. Its a good book if you are just learning how to play. I give this book A+++.

  • A great foundation to get you on your way to playing guitar!

I am an absolute "beginner" with the guitar. This book simplifies from step one how to learn to play. I wish it would teach about guitar parts such as the tremolo bar and such but so far it hasn't. I am not all the way through but the book has been very helpful and very clear for my understanding. However, the CD has done little in the way of help. It's supposed to give an audio teaching to go with the visual, but I have yet to find many "tracks" that show the sound of the tab I'm looking at. I wonder if some of them even pertain to the book. But the book is a great start.

  • Get guitar for dummies first!

I bought this before I bought the Guitar For Dummies book, thinking that I could learn a lot from it as a beginning guitar player. I found it to be too advanced without first reading Guitar For Dummies. I would suggest getting that book first, if you are an absolute beginner like I was! You won’t regret it!

  • love this book and would recommend it to anyone starting out

i dont normally do these review things, but this book helped me so much that i couldn't help it. trying to teach myself to play guitar and just couldn't get it (people in music stores so not helpful!), found this at a bookstore and thought it would help. the price on ebay was better so bought it here. it really is easy to understand and explains the ins and outs of the guitar very well. iv used it so much that the pages are tattered and well used. again, just love this book.
