Vintage Stillman, but not his best
For those of us who still love METROPOLITAN, Whit Stillman can truly do no wrong. But, as one of his characters might say, that doesn't mean he is completely infallible, because some of his films are clearly more perfect than others. Damsels in Distress returns to the collegiate conversations of earlier Stillman works, with just a little more silliness and maybe a little less likelihood that audiences will identify closely with his characters. Because, whereas BARCELONA and LAST DAYS OF DISCO and METROPOLITAN concerned characters younger than Stillman (and many of his most ardent fans) they were only SLIGHTLY younger, and their situations resonate in memory- late night philosophical discussions, postal romances, really really important views on Life and Society, jobs and ... For those of us who still love METROPOLITAN, Whit Stillman can truly do no wrong. Well, Mr Stillman is old enough to have children who recently graduated from college and, despite his sharp eye, he is clearly looking at college life from the far side of fifty. Maybe it is my own bifocals, but Damsels looks less like something I might have been involved in and more like something my friends' children might do. College is less brainy and more superficial. Well meaning friends still say remarkably blunt things and misunderstandings still breed comedy, but we are watching a movie, not eavesdropping on a life like our own. If it were not from Whit Stillman, this movie could probably have been turned into a beer soaked party flick, with more skin and less talking. As it is, we are halfway there: not quite a witty comedy of manners but still just a little shy and standoffish. Definitely worth seeing, but probably not the best film of the year.

I kept waiting for something to happen in this movie. It has some ironic humor, but really falls flat on story and of all things ends with a weird musical number. I was disappointed, as the wind up looked like it would be an entertaining ensemble. But the movie just goes and goes without any interesting twists you can relate to. Sorry to be so severe. Quirky Surprise
This film really sneaks up on you with a clever ( if somewhat implausible ) plot, terrifically articulate dialogue, and three-dimensional characters, especially the lead as portrayed by Greta Gerwig. I was pleasantly surprised by how this quirky movie by unique director Whit Stillman pulled me in and continued to surprise with its twists and turns until a very satisfying finale.
