An Unusual Twist on A Novel Format
What a unique way to write an autobiography (though the actual amount of text in the book would likely not even make it much more than a multi-page story in the Advocate or some similar publication). Graphic novel format is used to tell an emotional and yet heartwarming story of the author's family relationships and her own story of coming to maturity and discovering her own identity (as we all do, though perhaps not in the same way). It has its definitely humorous moments while also covering some traumatic and (perhaps) shocking events and discoveries during her life, ones that deeply affected her direction in life. The artwork is well done and makes the text come to life, so to speak, and uses a unique style to visually portray the sometimes quirky environment of Alison's life as well as ... This reminds me of the Classics Illustrated comics that I read as a junior high student to get me through some tomes like Moby Dick and A Tale of Two Cities. Without them I would still be wandering the maze of the language the original authors used at that period in literature. This book is a great read for any one in the LGBTQ culture.
