About this product

Product Information

Ambiguous Commitments and Uncertain Policies offers a reassessment of the Truman Doctrine. In this insightful, thorough, and carefully documented study, Judith Jeffery tests the truth of the claim that America's peacetime intervention in Greece was a model on which to base other such ventures. In March 1947, President Truman launched a program of U.S. aid to Greece. Truman saw in Greece, which had been shattered by World War II, not only a dire situation needing humanitarian aid, but also an opportunity to assert American authority in this early period of the Cold War: civil war waged by the Communist-backed guerrilla movement against the government was threatening to further destroy the country. The president and his administration thus dispatched American troops with the directive to destroy the Communist forces. The defeat of the Communists in 1949 was hailed as a great U.S. military achievement. Did this achievement come at the expense of the Truman Doctrine--which made explicit that the first priority of President Truman and his administration in defeating communism was to improve the standard of living in Greece? How do claims about the success of the aid program measure up against the original intentions of the Administration in mid-1947 and against the program's real outcome at the beginning of the 1950s? What was the real story behind the Greek Communist defeat? Jeffery's cogent analysis of events from 1947 to 1952 provides fodder for today's heavily contested debates about U.S. foreign policy and intervention.

  • Where's Mom Now that I Need Her

Despite the comical title, this book is full of information that any young person needs to know when going out into the world. Everything from thrift to first aid is included. There is additional helpful advice, such as how to do the laundry and deal with stains. The cooking section is more suited to a young person in his first apartment, rather than dorm life, but the rest can be useful in any situation.

  • Where's Mom Now That I Need Her

I originally bought a copy of this book several years ago. After I moved, my cats got hold of it and ruined it. When I found another copy on eBay, I bought it as a replacement, which, to me, means it is a special book. I had used many of the recipes previously and found them easy and delicious. I enjoy basic cooking when I have time and these recipes are basic. When I purchased the original book back in the early 90's, I also purchased the College Survival Cookbook. Interestingly enough, the recipes didn't overlap, but I actually enjoyed this book more. In addition to the recipes is the information about setting up a kitchen, how to select foods, how to store food, as well as basic first aid and laundry. To me, an excellent book, not only for the beginner, but for anyone interested ...

  • Excellent Book!

I received this book as a wedding gift in 1987. What a great gift for the young lady on her own. I used it every day and found many, many tips and tricks. My grandmother gave me the original book and I am now buying for my daughters and daughter-in-law. Gram was a very smart farm wife and new that starting out in a new home without mom can be a challenge. This book was a godsend. Grandma' always know best!
