Reviews
"Lively historical fiction at its best." -Kirkus Reviews, starred review "Samuel's account of the voyage to Virginia, political intrigues among the settlers, and the harrowing first winter of the James Town settlement brings to life figures like Smith, Powhatan, and Pocahontas. Details about food and daily life add realism to the story, and quotes from historical sources begin each chapter." -School Library Journal, starred review

  • Great tool for students new to historical fiction!

As a published author and reading teacher I recommend this book. The story keeps the less experienced reader moving along without sacrificing important historical details. I have used Blood on the River for years to enable students to get a picture of what the experience of trying to settle early Jamestown may have been like. The characters seem real and there is just enough detail to get even more challenged students engaged in productive discussions. Great character development throughout the novel for our main character, Samuel Collier, as well.

  • Jamestowne, 1607

I haven’t had time to read it yet. I ordered it because I’m very interested in Jamestown history as Richard Pace was my 11th GGrandfather. I’m trying to understand as much as I can about the circumstances of everyday survival.
