About this product

Product Information

Robert Mulligan's graceful coming-of-age drama, set in rural Louisiana in 1957, explores the relationship change two sisters experience when both fall for the handsome new boy next door, Court Foster (Jason London). The younger sister, 14-year-old Dani (Reese Witherspoon), gains Court's friendship and a brief kiss but not his romantic affections, which he delivers to college-bound Maureen (Emily Warfield). The once-close sisters turn into rivals while learning some painful lessons about growing up. But when a sudden tragedy strikes, they are forced to draw strength from their powerful familial bond. Witherspoon gives a moving performance in her film debut, and Mulligan demonstrates once again his graceful and tender knack (shown in previous films such as SUMMER OF '42 and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD) for capturing the bewilderment, awkwardness, and fresh excitement of adolescence.

  • The Man in the Moon (DVD 2009)

This poignant, engaging film stars the always wonderful Sam Waterston as well as a luminous Tess Harper and, of course, Reese Witherspoon, before she became a magazine cover. Her talent and screen presence are obvious, even at her young age in this one. Reese plays Dani, the younger of two teenage sisters who both fall in love with the same boy. He likes the imaginative, dreamy little girl, but only as a friend -- especially after he meets her pretty, popular, and capable older sister, who is about his age. Dani is heartbroken, but her mother's difficult pregnancy, a new baby, and then, a horrible tragedy overshadow her own feelings and unltimately help bring her closer to her sister. It's unusual these days to find a film that you could feel good about watching with your kids. The ...

  • Beautifuuly rendered coming of age tale

This movie is a beautifuuly rendered coming of age tale. On a farm outside a small Louisiana town in the 1950s, 14 year old Dani (Reese Witherspoon in her first movie) wonders if she will ever be as pretty and popular as her 17 year old sister Maureen. This becomes especially important as Dani is beginning to notice boys, particlularly Court, the 17 year old young man she meets when swimming. Although Dani and Maureen have always been especially close, a rift develops between the sisters after Court meets Maureen. Intelligently written, excellent direction, lovely cinematography, and exceptional acting make this a particularily worthwhile and entertaining film.

  • The Man in the Moon (2001, DVD)

Any collaborative work, including a movie of surpassing excellence, demands a great script and an equally great ensemble cast. I cannot think of any film that qualifies by those standards better than this one. Sam Waterston, Tess Harper, Gail Strickland, Jason London and Emily Warfield are perfectly tuned into their roles. And the performance of a young Reese Witherspoon puts the lie to the old saw that youth is wasted on the young. Her range and grasp simply exceed anything you might expect of a 14-year-old who plays a 14-year-old. This film is so well done, so memorable. Sit yourself down and enjoy.

  • The Man in the Moon

This is an excellent movie about young love, life and the tragedies that are endured. Reese Witherspoon was wonderful in her role and it can be seen how good an actress she was and became. This also shows the hardships that farm families must endure. It's an excellent movie that deserved accolades that it didn't receive...and, it's worth seeing...if for Reese Witherspoon's performance if nothing else. I love this movie!!!
