Inspiring story of altruism. Heart wrenching but wonderfully entertaining too!
I adore this movie and can watch it again and again. The film itself is beautifully orchestrated and the true story it is based on a heart touching and simultaneously funny story at the same time. A wonderful portrayal of black history and a woman who is a shining example of what we all should strive to be. All the characters in the film have incredible true stories to tell. Can't say enough about how fabulous this movie is. I adore this movie and can watch it again and again. The film itself is beautifully orchestrated and the true story it is based on a heart touching and simultaneously funny story at the same time. A wonderful portrayal of black history and a woman who is a shining example of what we all should strive to be. All the characters in the film have incredible true stories to tell. Based on the true story of Ruben Santiago Jr. and his relationship with his guardian Rachel Crosby, set in 1950's and 1960's Lackawanna, New York. This poignant and colorful drama tells the inspirational story of a courageous woman, Nanny, whose spirit and strength served as the foundation for a struggling community trying to survive during the segregation era. Starring an exceptional ensemble cast led by Jimmy Smits, Rosie Perez, and Macy Gray. A great deal of care was given in the sets, costumes and music of the period. The relationship between the characters we meet is both simple and complicated as the movie goes on, but the steady performance of Ms. Merkerson is ... Blues at their best
I have always liked S. Epatha Merkerson in "Law and Order" and wanted to see how she performed out of the police setting. Merkerson pleasantly surprised me with the depth of her performance. She totally brought this band of misfits and castaways together in an extraordinary depiction of the story of Rachel "Nanny" Crosby. "Nanny" presents a strong love of family and true sense of community throughout the many trials and challenges thrust before her. She is the rock of that community and the pillar they all lean on when the need is there. All of this Merkerson very graciously and lovingly takes in stride and portrays effortlessly. I thought the story went quickly and certainly will watch this again with friends. Well worth the purchase!I have always liked S. The actors are superb. The costumes and setting are impeccable. The plot is sincere, makes you feel just like you were there with all of those people or wish you had been. Very authentic. If you want to be transported back to the late 50's early 60's in the African American/Hispanic American neighborhood to see and feel what it was like, watch Lackawanna Blues.
