    A So-So Prequel to the 1982 Film

The Thing (2011) is a prequel to John Carpenter’s film starring Kurt Russell of the same title. A geological expedition in the Antarctic discovers a spacecraft and inhabitant in the ice, bring the creature to the research station, where it escapes and begins killing and assimilating the expedition crew. The film is reminiscent of the Alien movies where Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) battles the Alien. Not a bad movie, but at the same time not a very good movie. If you’ve seen the Carpenter / Russell film there is little here you haven’t already seen. And of course the 1951 film is still a classic.

  • The Thing (2011) blu-ray

Despite some criticism this movie has been getting it's actually a pretty good prequel and didn't feel like a waste of time to see it. To appreciate this prequel you really need to see the 1982 movie that this is a prequel of because of how cleverly it connects with the 1982 "The Thing". Without the constant mindset of how 1982 version is so much better and have a new outlook is the best way to enjoy this prequel. Kinda odd how it has the same exact title as the 1982 "The Thing" when it's a prequel, it would have made more sense if it had something else in the title like Awakening or something else. But there might be plans for a remake or a sequel after the 1982 movie. Now this movie isn't groundbreaking for present time like how the 1982 film was groundbreaking for it's time but it's ...

  • A near perfect prequel to the 1982 movie

As far as sci-fi horror movies go, this couldn't get much better. It's a slick production from start to finish, paying homage to the 1982 John Carpenter movie while developing it's own storyline as a solid prequel to that film. In some ways it's even better as of course, techniques have improved in 20 years. Attention to detail and excellent acting is there in every scene and there are enough jumps and threatening situations to keep you zeroed in all the way. I was particularly fond of the way they near-perfectly tied the two movies together at the end, even going so far as to use the same music which urges you to immediately pull out the older flick and pick up the story right where it left off. Great fun!

  • THE PREQUEL TO THE 1982 CLASSIC!

It's true that these two movies (2011 & 1982) are kind of alike. However, that being said, there is just enough of a difference between the two to make it interesting. In addition, it does answer the question of "what happened to the Norwegian research facility" that Kurt Russell & Co. find after the appearance of the dog at the beginning of the 1982 movie. Now, you'll have to watch it to find out!
