something completely different, white castle...
i bought this for the association with white castle, seriously! it's a good movie, life should be this easy. it brings another culture to us. the video quality sucked at the beginning. sorta like wizard of oz in B&W for the first part. (i don't know if this was intentional). it drags you in, gives you a feeling for a different culture. it makes you cry, then makes you cheer, it makes you FEEL. i guess it achieved it's purpose. a failed movie would leave you feeling indifferent. it could have been done better, but this was the first film by this director. it's a good first, and i look forward to her second.i bought this for the association with white castle, seriously! it's a good movie, life should be this easy. it brings another culture to us. the video quality sucked at the beginning. sorta like wizard of oz in B&W for the first part. Good story line and acting
I saw the movie in the Fall when it first came out. It does show a world that most of us will not have to face in which our country is occupied by a foreign power. Keep in mind the movie does present the Palestinian point of view so some may not like that at all but, to a neutral observer it is not offensive. The characters in the film are authentic and it does show the struggles of trying to fit into a new country especially for her son when he enters a high school. The one school teacher shows a bit of "ugly American" when he with a touch of sarcasm prounounces his name. You will have to read subtitles for most for most of the movie unless you undersand Arabic.I saw the movie in the Fall when it first came out. Great movie, very subtly depicts the experience of immigrants, with playfulness and humor. So many people in our world start journeys like this one, and thank goodness many succeed and enrich their host country's cultural treasure chest. If you have been through such a journey, you'll no doubt appreciate this movie. If you haven't, you might look at new immigrants with more compassion, and value their courage and determination.
