In 1985 Suzuki brought the technology from its championship-winning Grand Prix motorcycles to the street in the form of the groundbreaking GSX-R series. For decades the Japanese manufacturers had built sporting motorcycles that were all motor and very little else. For the complete package-bikes that handled as well on a racetrack as they handled in a straight-line drag race-riders had to purchase ultra expensive, ultra exotic machinery from European manufacturers. In one lightning strike Suzuki changed that. Suzuki GSX-R tells the complete story of these remarkable bikes.

    Not what I expected...

    Enthusiast histories of cars and motorcycle marques generally follow a particular formula. Lots of glossy pictures supplied by the manufacturer and breathless text explaining how the Borgward (or whatever marque is the subject of the book) evolved into the worldbeating supercar/superbike it is today. These books are usually good for an overview of model history with text and photos documenting specifications and year-by-year changes. Not so this book. While the author gives some interesting historical details on the development of the first GSX-R models, and some limited racing history, his writing style can be difficult to decipher and often awkward. Likewise his comparisons to cars are sometimes bizarre ("Porsche Targa Carrera" held out as a musclecar???) What was most ...

    Gives a detailed history of the GSXR. I thought I new my Gixxer history, WRONG. I could not put this down.
