About this product

Product Information

Director Bruce Beresford's affinity for the subtleties of southern life is apparent in this adaptation of Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Starring Jessica Tandy as Daisy Werthan and Morgan Freeman as Hoke Colburn, the film opens in late-1940s Atlanta. Since Miss Daisy is becoming a menace behind the wheel, her son, Boolie (Dan Aykroyd), ignores her protests and hires Hoke, a black chauffeur. When the feisty matron decides to resist necessity and walk to the store, the equally stubborn chauffeur follows her in her car. As he says to Boolie, "I used to rassle hogs down to the ground...ain't nary a hog got away from me yet." But Hoke's methods are gentleness and patience, and as the years elapse in his ongoing tug-of-war with the temperamental Daisy, she begins to tacitly acknowledge his wisdom. When she expresses annoyance over the demands of the nascent civil rights movement, Hoke points out to the Jewish woman the similarity between the attack on her synagogue and Klan attacks on black churches. But it is only after many years together that they can finally admit to the depth of the friendship they have shared. The two stars give unforgettable performances, and Beresford's direction is a model of restraint.

  • Driving Miss Daisy (DVD, 2003)

Jessica Tandy is excellent as Daisy Werthan, an aging Jewish Woman in late 1940's Atlanta. She is a strong willed woman but lately things are starting to slip a little. Her son Boolie (Dan Aykroyd) owns a textile mill in Atlanta and is a very wealthy and well respected business man. One day his mom gets into the car and instead of reverse she goes forward and demolishes the car. Luckily, she wasn't injured. Having recognized all the signs of old age, and ignoring all of her protests, he hires her a chauffeur Hoke Colburn (Morgan Freeman). Holk is a black man who drove trucks for a large Atlanta dairy for years. He is now retired and has worked as a chauffeur to a retired judge and friend of Boolie. The judge recently dies and Hoke is available. He buys a brand new Hudson automobile and ...

  • Heartwarming, simple and very worthy!

What a wonderful film that touches the heart! the gem of this film belongs to jessica tandy who won a best actress academy award for her role as daisy werthan, a grumpy southern widow who refuses a chaffeur to drive her around until she meets hoke, a patient, determined man who eventually wins miss daisy's heart. we see hoke try so patiently at first to win miss daisy's friendship and eventually proves his honesty (the can of salmon). here we see their friendship blossom as she teaches Hoke to read, as they travel thru life together, grow old together thru troubled, segregated times, thru the good and bad, both protagonists learn that two people so different can have so much in common. the beauty of the film lies on the everyday events that many of us take for granted. the film speaks ...

  • Excellent movie well acted with great actors!!!!!!!!!

I have loved this movie from the first time I saw it. The actors Jessica Tandy, Morgan Freeman and Dan Akroyd really did a great job in this movie. This film gives a lot to the audience. Jessica Tandy does a great job playing an feisty but loveable lady who does not want to admit to getting older. It give a wonderful and believable story of 2 people from totally different back grounds. Who have there ups and downs. But end up being the best of friends. It also portrays what is was like for the coloreds went through in the deep south with the whites only issues. Dan Akroyd did a wonderful job as her loving but controlling son, who is married to a women that no mother could like. This movie is really about 2 people who come together and form a wonderful beautiful friendship that last through ...
