About this product

Product Information

Moneyball is a quest for the secret of success in baseball. Following the low-budget Oakland Athletics, their larger-than-life general manger, Billy Beane, and the strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts, Michael Lewis has written not only "the single most influential baseball book ever" (Rob Neyer, Slate) but also what "may be the best book ever written on business" (Weekly Standard). I wrote this book because I fell in love with a story. The story concerned a small group of undervalued professional baseball players and executives, many of whom had been rejected as unfit for the big leagues, who had turned themselves into one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. But the idea for the book came well before I had good reason to write it--before I had a story to fall in love with. It began, really, with an innocent question: how did one of the poorest teams in baseball, the Oakland Athletics, win so many games? With these words Michael Lewis launches us into the funniest, smartest, and most contrarian book since, well, since Liar's Poker. Moneyball is a quest for something as elusive as the Holy Grail, something that money apparently can't buy: the secret of success in baseball. The logical places to look would be the front offices of major league teams, and the dugouts, perhaps even in the minds of the players themselves. Lewis mines all these possibilities--his intimate and original portraits of big league ballplayers are alone worth the price of admission--but the real jackpot is a cache of numbers--numbers!--collected over the years by a strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts: software engineers, statisticians, Wall Street analysts, lawyers and physics professors. What these geek numbers show--no, prove--is that the traditional yardsticks of success for players and teams are fatally flawed. Even the box score misleads us by ignoring the crucial importance of the humble base-on-balls. This information has been around for years, and nobody inside Major League Baseball paid it any mind. And then came Billy Beane, General Manager of the Oakland Athletics. Billy paid attention to those numbers --with the second lowest payroll in baseball at his disposal he had to--and this book records his astonishing experiment in finding and fielding a team that nobody else wanted. Moneyball is a roller coaster ride: before the 2002 season opens, Oakland must relinquish its three most prominent (and expensive) players, is written off by just about everyone, and then comes roaring back to challenge the American League record for consecutive wins. In a narrative full of fabulous characters and brilliant excursions into the unexpected, Michael Lewis shows us how and why the new baseball knowledge works. He also sets up a sly and hilarious morality tale: Big Money, like Goliath, is always supposed to win... how can we not cheer for David?

Delightful read - Informative - Thought Provoking and insightful.

Having read the book many years ago I was excited to locate a copy available. Moneyball by Michael Lewis is certainly a wonderful read. The baseball fanatic that I am, I found the book to be a true delight as a peak behind the scenes of the world of baseball raft picks. A wealth of detail explains the individuals who are discussed within the book. Commonsense and thought provoking tops are covered in multiple chapters. Beyond a book which is just read chapter by chapter it is fantastic to write notes on quotes and ideas.

  • A book for ALL baseball lovers!

Oh my how am I the first person on eBay reviewing a book of this great calibre? This is my second copy of this book, and it will soon be my second time reading it. Unfortunately I have to finish a near 600 page book, also on baseball, before I can start... and I am a slow reader. I was given my first copy of this book by the husband of my wife's cousin. He told me that as a baseball fan, I would love it. Love it, I did. It is a story of a former player named Billy Beane. It's the story of a man who had so much talent that he should be a household name, however, Billy could not hit major league pitching and never did live up to his expectations. Eventually Billy turned to his team, the Oakland A's, and asked to become a lead scout. He took a major pay cut to do this. Billy found his true ...

  • Great reading for baseball fans

I am only part way through the book, but I can already say it's a great book. If you love baseball and you find the behind the scenes workings of baseball and scouting interesting, then this book is for you. The author tells stories about people whose names I have heard before - now I get to learn more about some of these names. The book tells stories of the more recent history of baseball, the baseball I grew up with in the 70s and 80s. Good book. I will be finding more time to read in the coming days and weeks. If you're a Mets fan, with the changes in the organization going on now in the fall of 2010, it's a must read.

  • Must have for any Oakland A's or MLB fan at all!

I bought this book because I am a longtime Oakland A's fan and found it to be a very quick and informative read. I wish I would have read it years ago. It's great for getting a better understanding of why some teams can spend enormous amounts of money on players and why others can't. I also found it interesting to learn the ways how A's GM Billy Beane can get a small market/small budget team to not only still compete, but at times out perform and finish better than the larger market/large budget teams.

  • Excellent book

Moneyball is well known within baseball circles, but appeals to a larger audience as it depicts the real lives of ballplayers as they move from team to team. The book provided an inside look into the secretive wolrd of baseball GM's; their habits, language (!) and thoughts. A great book, easy to read, hard to put down.
