Best Friends Unites Two Top Stars of the 1980s
Goldie Hawn and Burt Reynolds are at the top of their game in this movie. A writing team for movies that has lived together for several years, Richard Babson(Burt) decides that they should get married when they are finally buying a place together. Paula Mc Connell(Goldie) is afraid that marriage will ruin what a great life that they have had so far together. He finally convinces her, and a Mexican justice of the peace performs the nuptials. The Mexican mispronounces much of the wedding ceremony but the phrase "I thee endow," is hilariously misread as I dee endo." We are all cracked up! The couple is truly funny before the wedding, but afterwards they get even funnier. On a train ride east from California to Buffalo to meet her parents (Jessica Tandy and Barnard Hughes), we ... Once we get to Buffalo, we find a father-in-law who is chasing the cleaning lady, reading porn in the bathroom, and a mother-in-law who doesn't care. The highlight is a 40th Anniversary party for the parents with the only guests being Paula and Richard. The movie continues with a visit to Virgina to see his parents (Audra Lindley and Keenan Wynn). The mother (Lindley) is obsessed with taking pictures and planning a huge party for the newlyweds, although she is quite upset about not being told of the real nuptials. Richard and his father bond well but have to lie to get away from the mother. His sister has moved in with her two boys, and the mother also plans a morning shopping spree for the girls; Paula's resulting hair-do and her lunch with Chicken salad are hilarious because she has to take valiums just to cope. It seems that the marriage is doomed because the couple is starting to fight. The movie emphasizes that outside forces can overwhelm relationships if you let them. For anyone who was married in the 1970s and 1980s, this comedy will remind you of the life of newlyweds then. My own marriage involved in-laws just like these. I am sure that this movie inspired the recent movie "Meet the Parents." This is not my favorite Goldie movie, but it is one of her best. "Overboard" and "Private Benjamin" are far funnier. "Swing Shift" was great also. I preferred Burt in "The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing," but he was great here. It was wonderful to see some of the older stars of my day as the parents. You may remember Audra Lindley from the soap "Another World" and the nighttime show "Three's Company." Jessica Tandy went on to win an Oscar for "Driving Miss Daisy." Keenan Wynn was a tough guy in "Kiss Me Kate" and Barnard Hughes has played many roles in the movies but especially on TV. The movie is also lovingly directed by Norman Jewison with music by Michel Le Grand and lyrics by Marilyn and Alan Bergman. You will recognize the tune "How Do You Keep the Music Playing" especially.

BIG DISAPPOINTMENT !!!
I was really disappointed in this movie. After discovering a mutual love of the theme song, 'How Do You Keep The Music Playing', my girl friend highly recommended this movie to me. Normally we have the same taste in movies but I didn't like this one at all. It's slow, it's poorly acted, the storyline is a little predictable and I didn't think Burt and Goldie worked as a romantic couple. When I went searching for the DVD and found out that it was virtually impossible to rent and you could barely find it for purchase (I found one for $40 another for $44) I was elated to find this one on ebay for $10. BUT NOT AFTER VIEWING IT. On a scale of 1 to 5, I'd rate it 1-1/2. The music deserves a much better movie.I was really disappointed in this movie.
