A Real Masterpiece!!
Frank Wildhorn has been creating a wealth of wonderful theatrical works... Jekyll & Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Wonderland... but this work is truly something special! Such an undertaking, to score a piece about the single most defining event in all of American history, the Civil War. Wildhorn not only captures the the essence of the war itself in his music, but supports it with quotations dispersed throughout the piece by Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglas, and other well known historical figures of that time. Glorious, heart-wrenching, and mood-provoking... this is a musical that was well worth the wait, and truly captures the spirit of the Union solders, as well as the music and spirit of the Confederacy. Riveting musical rarity!
I saw this production live at its premiere here in Houston at the Alley Theatre. This particular recording is of the entire show, which, believe me, left not a dry eye in the house every night...and I saw it 3 times. The music for the "north" and the "south" and the women caught in between, is quite simply moving. rousing, chilling and superb, and so is this recording. It's hard to find, and whether you like musicals or not, if you like country music or good pop music, you'll treasure this recording! G R E A T CD
I got this for my husband. Our family does Civil War Re-enacting and it is hard to find "period" correct music that we can play at events in the evening while sitting around the campfire or while we are eating dinner. I got a copy at a yard sale only to get it home and find out the 2nd CD was no good. I was so happy to find one on ebay..... If you like to listen to old songs, songs with feeling, or just songs that do not have someone screaming at you thur your speakers this is a geat CD.......I got this for my husband.
