'Plain work' covers the sewing that every average woman was expected to do for her household, from garments to tea towels, and 'Fancy Work' was the realm of the genteel and well-to-do. In the latter case, fancy work was not just decorative, but a mark of a woman's femininity and social standing. Dozens and dozens of examples are shown, and each one has an alluring intimacy; individual personalities reach out to us from the past through the stitches.
